Unveiling the Surprising Winners of the New York Wine & Spirits Competition
Last month, the highly-anticipated New York Wine & Spirits Competition took place, and the results have been revealed. The competition showcased an array of whiskeys, and the winners of Best Bourbon and Best in Show might catch you off guard. Believe it or not, both were produced by a non-distilling producer named 15 Stars, based in Kentucky.
Now, let’s take a moment to understand how this blind competition operates. Expert judges were presented with flights of spirits in various categories, and they embarked on a taste-testing journey completely blind. The only information disclosed to them was the proof, category, and style of each spirit. Those awarded Double Gold medals progressed to the final round, still maintaining the blind element, where the winners of each spirits category were determined.
In a surprise turn of events, 15 Stars emerged as the Best in Show winner in the whiskey category, surpassing several more well-known and established competitors. As you may recall, 15 Stars was so named as a tribute to Kentucky becoming the 15th state to join the Union. Rick and Ricky Johnson, a father and son team, run the company. One of their experiments involved using corn typically used for popcorn to create bourbon in collaboration with Bardstown Bourbon Company.
Curiously enough, the Best in Show whiskey at the competition was not a bourbon, but rather 15 Stars’ First West Rye Whiskey. This blend of whiskey, aged between six and eight years and bottled at 105 proof, won over the judges with its enticing mixture of spice, dried fruit, and honey notes on the palate.
Notably, the Best Bourbon winner also hailed from 15 Stars. The Sherry Cask Finished Bourbon, a blend of 13 and 10-year-old whiskey from Kentucky and Indiana, bottled at 115 proof, took home the prestigious prize. It should be noted that the sherry-seasoned cask finishing may spark controversy among whiskey purists, who may argue in favor of straight bourbon with no secondary maturation, akin to esteemed brands such as George T. Stagg, Rabbit Hole, and Blue Run Spirits. However, quality ultimately triumphs, and if it’s good, it’s good.
Although it may appear coincidental that both winners originated from the same producer, it truly serves as a testament to the exceptional quality of whiskey that 15 Stars consistently delivers. If you wish to experience these award-winning spirits for yourself, the First West Rye is conveniently available for purchase through Total Wine. The Sherry Cask Finished Bourbon, on the other hand, may prove more elusive online, so it’s advisable to check your local liquor store for availability.
Feeling inspired? Why not organize your own blind tasting to see if you concur with the competition’s results? It’s always intriguing to explore and embrace the diverse world of spirits. Cheers!

In cooking, just two ingredients are enough to replicate the fragrance of vodka.
Rethinking Vodka Substitutes in Cooking: Exploring Flavor Enhancers Beyond Alcohol
Vodka has long been celebrated in the culinary world for its ability to deglaze pots and pans, enhance texture, and elevate flavors in dishes. However, what if you find yourself in a situation where you don’t have vodka on hand or prefer not to use it in your cooking? Fear not, there are plenty of alternatives that can provide similar results without the presence of alcohol.
One such alternative is a simple mixture of apple cider and lime juice. By combining equal parts of these staple ingredients, you can achieve the same effects as vodka. The acidic lime juice effortlessly deglazes your pan and emulsifies sauces or glazes, while the apple cider brings a sweet and sharp aroma reminiscent of vodka. These ingredients are likely already in your kitchen, making it a convenient option for those who don’t want to stray too far from tradition.
Another alcohol-free substitute for vodka is lemon juice. The acidity of lemon juice not only helps to texturally bring together all the elements of your dish but also acts as a remedy for over-salted dishes. While lemon does impart its distinctive flavor, this can actually be a pleasant addition to many recipes. If you prefer to dilute the lemon flavor, simply create an equal-parts mixture of lemon juice and water.
For those looking for a slightly different flavor profile, white vinegar can be an excellent option. Working similarly to lime juice and apple cider, white vinegar brings a briney taste to tomato-based sauces, such as vodka pasta. It may not have the sweetness of apple cider or the distinctive citrus notes of lemon, but it adds a contrasting flavor that complements certain dishes. Remember to use white vinegar sparingly, as its strong taste can easily overpower other ingredients.
Lastly, white grape juice offers a milder vodka substitute with a hint of sweetness and a sour, strong aroma reminiscent of vodka. While it may not provide the exact same flavor profile, it can still enhance dishes and lend its own unique characteristics.
In conclusion, while vodka is often hailed as a crucial ingredient in certain recipes, there are several non-alcoholic substitutes that can provide similar effects. Whether you opt for a mixture of apple cider and lime juice, lemon juice, white vinegar, or white grape juice, each alternative brings its own distinctive qualities to the table. Experiment with these options and discover new flavor enhancers that suit your taste buds. Happy cooking!

Female Hispanic-owned Island Getaway Rum, prepared to conquer the world, all the way from Texas to Tokyo.
Stephanie Houston has a deep connection to her ancestry through sugarcane. As she crafts rum in Dripping Springs, she fondly remembers her Guanches forefathers from the Canary Islands, where sugarcane was a valuable resource in the 1400s. These islands, located near Morocco off the coast of Africa, hold a Spanish community. Houston’s Guanches ancestors would grow sugarcane on the Canary Islands and ship it to the Caribbean, creating an unexpected connection to her current career in the rum industry. This connection feels like an unspoken legacy in her DNA as she continues to expand her brand, Island Getaway Rum.
Before diving into the world of rum, Houston was a graduate of UT Austin with a degree in African history. She grew up in Dallas but eventually returned to Austin after completing her education. Houston worked various jobs before reconnecting with a friend who owned a winery in the Texas Hill Country. When her friend expressed an interest in entering the rum industry, Houston felt an undeniable sense that this was her calling. She knew she was meant to be a part of this new adventure.
Over the following months, Houston eagerly asked her friend if it was finally “rum time.” This phrase became a running joke but also a symbol of her anticipation. When the time finally came, Houston became a co-owner of HYE Rum in 2016, based in Hye, Texas. The operations eventually moved to Dripping Springs in 2021, and HYE Rum transformed into Island Getaway Rum. Houston chose this name because it resonated with her personally and she believed it would also resonate with rum drinkers. The idea of an island vacation often includes enjoying a frozen rum drink at some point, making Island Getaway Rum a perfect fit.
As a member of the Texas Distilled Spirits Association, Houston is proud to be a part of one of only two female Hispanic-owned rum distilleries in Texas. Among the association’s approximately 210 registered distilleries, with only about 160 being active, only a handful are women-owned distilleries. Further narrowing it down, there are only two Hispanic-owned distilleries, one of which is Island Getaway Rum. Being the first female Hispanic-owned rum distillery in Texas has not come without its challenges. Houston has become aware of the lack of representation and capitalization of minority businesses in the industry. She aims to bring awareness to these issues and support other minority distilleries in the state.
Island Getaway Rum is readily available in Specs, Total Wine, and Party Stop stores across Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, Lubbock, Amarillo, and more. However, Houston’s vision extends far beyond Texas. She is currently working on expanding the brand globally, with recent trips to Vietnam to establish sales and plans to bring her rum to Tokyo, Japan, and Spain. Despite this global growth, Houston is dedicated to her Texas roots. She believes that Island Getaway Rum should be the number one choice for Texans and aims to make her brand a household name state-wide.
Stephanie Houston’s journey in the rum industry is more than just a career. It is a connection to her ancestry, a representation of underrepresented minorities in the industry, and a passion for creating high-quality rum. With Island Getaway Rum, Houston is making waves and leaving a lasting impact on the distilled spirits market.

Barrell’s “Tale Of Two Islands” Bourbon is the Whiskey Of The Week.
A Unique Approach to Craft Spirits
For the past few years, Barrell Craft Spirits has been making a name for itself in the world of cask-strength spirits. What sets them apart is that they don’t actually distill their own spirits. Instead, they focus on the art of blending, sourcing whiskeys from distilleries all across the country to create unique and delicious products. While they are known for their exceptional bourbons, they have also dabbled in rum, with impressive results.
One standout release from Barrell is their “Tale Of Two Islands” rum. This rum was made using a pot still distillation process in Jamaica and aged for 8 years. But what really sets it apart is the finish. After its time in Jamaica, the rum was transferred to casks that had previously held Islay whisky. The result is a robust and tropical rum with hints of peat and smoke. Bottled at an impressive 66.4% ABV, it is a truly exceptional spirit.
But what does all of this have to do with whiskey? Well, Barrell is now launching their Cask Finish Series, and they have held on to the casks used to finish the “Tale Of Two Islands” rum. These rum-and-whisky-infused casks were then used to finish the new Barrell Bourbon Cask Finish Series: “Tale Of Two Islands”. This bourbon is a blend of spirits from Maryland and Indiana, aged between 5 and 9 years. With a mashbill of 73% corn, 23% rye, and 4% malted barley, it boasts a complex and spicy flavor profile. Bottled at a hefty 59.11% ABV, this bourbon showcases the influence of the Jamaican rum and Islay whisky casks, with notes of banana, coconut, oak, spice, and a hint of smoke.
It’s important to note that Barrell produces a wide range of limited edition products, so it’s easy to miss out on something truly exceptional. The “Tale Of Two Islands” bourbon is definitely one to keep an eye out for. While the exact number of bottles produced is unknown, this limited release is sure to impress. And if by chance you stumble upon a bottle of the original “Tale Of Two Islands” rum, don’t hesitate to snatch it up. Alternatively, if you feel like spreading some generosity, I wouldn’t mind taking it off your hands.
Barrell Craft Spirits has proven that the art of blending is just as important as distilling when it comes to creating exceptional spirits. Their dedication to sourcing unique whiskeys and experimenting with finishes has resulted in some truly outstanding products. Whether you’re a bourbon enthusiast or a rum connoisseur, Barrell has something special to offer. So, take a moment to savor and contemplate their latest release, and remember to keep an eye out for their limited editions – you won’t want to miss out.

Meili Vodka is a spirit that is distilled in Montana, using grain grown there and water sourced from the snow-fed springs of the state. It’s a true homage to the land and its resources.
Momoa created Meili Vodka together with his friend and business partner, Blaine Halvorson. Halvorson is an LA-based cult-favorite clothing designer who grew up in Montana, so the partnership is a perfect blend of their shared passions. Together, they embarked on a journey seven years ago to create Meili Vodka, not only to tell their story, but to craft the best vodka on the planet.
And now, Momoa is bringing Meili Vodka to the West Coast. He has been drawing huge crowds in Southern California this week, and is now making his way to the Bay Area for meet-and-greets and bottle signings with fans. It’s an opportunity for fans to not only meet their favorite actor, but also potentially become customers of Meili Vodka.
Meili Vodka is priced at $24.99 and according to the website, it’s designed to be enjoyed neat. However, promoters say that it also works well in cocktails, giving consumers the flexibility to enjoy it however they prefer. Momoa and Halvorson will be making appearances at various grocery chains throughout the Bay Area, so if you’re a fan of Momoa or just curious about Meili Vodka, make sure to arrive early.

Our complete review is now available on the recently launched Jack Daniel’s Bonded Rye Whiskey.
The rise of Jack Daniel’s in recent years has been nothing short of incredible. The team in Lynchburg, Tennessee has been consistently releasing new and innovative whiskeys, pushing the boundaries of American whiskey. Last year, they introduced their “Bonded” line, featuring a Triple Mash and Tennessee Whiskey. These expressions were not only exceptional, but also affordable and easily accessible. This year, Jack Daniel’s has done it again with their Bonded Tennessee Rye.
The release of a Bonded Rye whiskey by Jack Daniel’s is truly exciting news. Not only will this whiskey be widely available, but it will also only cost around $30-$40 (depending on your state’s taxes). And let me tell you, it is worth every penny. The quality of this rye whiskey at such an affordable price point is truly remarkable.
What sets this Bonded Tennessee Rye apart is its impeccable craftsmanship. The base of this whiskey is Jack’s signature rye with a mash bill of 70% rye, 18% corn, and 12% malted barley. It is fermented with their own yeast and lactobacillus, twice distilled via column stills, and then filtered through 10 feet of sugar maple charcoal. After that, it spends four long years maturing in barrels before being batched, proofed, and bottled.
Now, let’s get into the tasting notes. On the nose, you’ll find ripe peaches, bananas, and Granny Smith apples, along with hints of molasses, winter ginger cakes, cinnamon bark, and smoldering sweetgrass. The palate offers a delightful combination of toffee and banana creaminess, followed by roasting herbs, sweetgrass, cedar bark, pipe tobacco, and smudging sage. The finish brings warmth and complexity with notes of banana bread, dried ancho chili, dark chocolate tobacco leaves, and more sweetgrass.
This Bonded Tennessee Rye is a fantastic choice for mixing cocktails. Its versatility makes it perfect for experimenting and creating your own unique drinks. However, it’s also enjoyable on its own, especially over ice when you want a no-fuss pour. One thing to note is that this is a fruity rye, in true Tennessee style. If you’re searching for a spicy or grassy rye, this might not be your top pick. While those elements are present, they take a backseat to the overall fruit-forward profile.
In terms of rating, I would give this Bonded Tennessee Rye an 85 out of 100. It’s a solid whiskey that shines in cocktails and highballs. Its humble yet tasty nature earns it a solid “B” rating. As for where to buy it, you’ll be pleased to know that it’s available wherever liquor is sold. So, there’s no need to worry about tracking down this gem.
In conclusion, Jack Daniel’s has once again impressed whiskey enthusiasts with their Bonded Tennessee Rye. With its affordable price, widespread availability, and exceptional quality, it’s a whiskey that deserves a spot on your bar shelf. Whether you’re mixing cocktails or enjoying it neat, this rye whiskey is sure to please. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to try this gem firsthand.
Playboy ventures into the vodka market by introducing cans that showcase Andy Warhol’s iconic bunny artwork.
Title: Play Hard: Playboy Spirits Ventures into Ready-to-Drink Cocktail Market
Introduction:
It has been over three years since Playboy last published a magazine, but the iconic brand is back in the spotlight with a new line of ready-to-drink vodka seltzers. This venture by Playboy Spirits, a joint partnership between Spirits Investment Partners (SIP) and PLBY Group, aims to captivate the younger consumer market. With four delicious flavors and eye-catching packaging featuring Andy Warhol’s bunny art created for Playboy in 1985, these vodka seltzers are set to make waves in the increasingly competitive canned cocktail industry.
Breaking the Mold:
Playboy Spirits already boasts a range of high-end liquor offerings like tequila, whiskey, and cognac under the Rare Hare brand. While these products command high prices of up to $999 per bottle, the new vodka seltzers target a broader audience in the crowded market of canned cocktails. Playboy Spirits is confident that the brand’s equity, coupled with unique packaging and exquisite flavors, will set them apart from their competitors. According to SIP CEO Marc Bushala, most competitors lack the product quality and packaging aesthetics that Play Hard brings to the table.
The Playboy Evolution:
Since its last magazine publication, Playboy has reinvented itself as a licensing platform, a creator platform akin to OnlyFans, and a lifestyle brand that stands for individuality, self-expression, and playfulness. The brand’s slogan has shifted from “entertainment for men” to “pleasure for all,” reflecting the changing times and societal mindsets. Playboy Spirits aims to tap into this brand image, providing consumers in their 20s and 30s with a unique drinking experience that aligns with their values and desire for self-expression.
Expansion and Artistic Collaborations:
The new Play Hard vodka seltzers will initially be available in Miami and Orlando, with plans to expand into seven or eight additional markets in 2024. Moreover, Playboy Spirits has intentions to introduce the brand in Asia and is also exploring collaborations with renowned artists such as Keith Haring and Peter Max, who will lend their iconic art to accompany future varieties of ready-to-drink cocktails.
Authentic Engagement and Marketing:
To connect with consumers, Play Hard will leverage curated content across various digital and social platforms, ensuring the brand resonates with its target audience. Additionally, the company plans to engage consumers through strategic partnerships, including a unique sports platform that promises to be both playful and entertaining. Festivals, concerts, and other events will be arenas for Playboy Spirits to bring the brand experience to life.
Conclusion:
With Playboy Spirits’ latest line of vodka seltzers, Play Hard, the iconic Playboy brand proves its ability to evolve and remain relevant in today’s market. Boasting exceptional product quality and distinctive packaging, Play Hard aims to leave a lasting impression on the crowded ready-to-drink cocktail market. Playboy Spirits’ strategic expansion plans and collaborations with renowned artists indicate an exciting future for the brand. Get ready for a thrilling experience when you crack open a can of Play Hard vodka seltzer. Cheers to the epitome of self-expression, individuality, and playfulness!

Kōloa Rum Company’s preference is to produce rum in individual batches.
The story of Kōloa Rum Company begins in Old Kōloa Town on the Hawaiian island of Kaua’i. This is where Kōloa Mill, the first successful sugar mill in the state, opened its doors in 1835 and operated until 1998. Despite Hawaii’s reputation as America’s largest grower of sugarcane in the 19th and 20th centuries, the rum industry did not flourish until the 21st century. Blame it on the prohibitionist ways of the missionaries or the sugar industry’s focus on exporting sugar, but locally-made rum was not flowing out of Hawaii like lava. It wasn’t until recently that the rum industry started to gain traction.
Kōloa Rum, named after the Hawaiian word for “tall cane,” has become a popular choice for rum enthusiasts worldwide. Today, the company sells its rum to nine countries and 37 states in North America. But it wasn’t an easy journey for Kōloa Rum Company. Bob Gunter, the president and CEO, spent a decade working in the sugar business before venturing into the rum industry. He moved to Kaua’i from San Francisco to work in sugarcane and worked his way up from cultivation to milling. Later in his career, he moved to Maui to help build two distilleries, one for rum and one for vodka. In 2007, Gunter returned to Kaua’i with a mission to support Hawaii’s sugar industry and conceptualized Kōloa Rum Company.
The company officially launched in 2009, setting up a distillery in Kalaheo, just four miles from Old Kōloa Town. They also established a tasting room and retail store at the Kilohana Plantation in Līhuʻe, which was once home to 22,000 acres of sugarcane. This historical land, once owned by the parent company of Kōloa Mill, now serves as a tourist attraction.
In the beginning, the retail store was the only place where you could purchase Kōloa rum. Spirit distributors in the area didn’t have high hopes for the company’s success, considering the competition from giants like Bacardi. However, Kōloa Rum Company focused on perfecting its distillation process and using high-quality ingredients to create an artisan product that stood out from mass-produced rums.
One of the key distinctions of Kōloa Rum is the use of raw cane sugar instead of molasses or sugarcane juice. This choice results in a sweeter rum with notes of caramel and vanilla. Gunter believes that this makes their rum smoother and more enjoyable to sip.
Another crucial factor in the quality of the rum is the distillation process. While most mass-produced rums use column stills for a faster and more continuous distillation, Kōloa Rum Company takes a different approach. They use a 1,210-gallon copper pot still, enabling them to be selective about the chemicals and impurities they remove during the distillation process. After the first distillation, they discard the “heads” and “tails” and keep only the sweetest part of the alcohol, known as the “heart.” This attention to detail and handcrafted approach sets Kōloa Rum Company apart.
Whether you’re a rum connoisseur or simply enjoy a good drink, Kōloa Rum is definitely worth a try. With its rich history rooted in Hawaii’s sugarcane industry and its commitment to producing high-quality rum, it’s no wonder that Kōloa Rum Company has found success. So, next time you’re enjoying a rum cocktail, raise your glass to the craft distillers at Kōloa Rum Company who made it all possible.
A Unique Process and Ingredients: The Story of Kōloa Rum
Kōloa Rum is not your average rum distillery. Located in Kaleheo, Hawaii, the company takes pride in its unique process and high-quality ingredients that set its products apart from the rest. From its collaboration with local agricultural businesses to its commitment to preserving Hawaiian sugarcane heritage, Kōloa Rum is changing the game in the world of rum production.
It all starts with the distillation, where Kōloa Rum uses a careful and traditional process to create its exceptional spirits. After distillation, the rum is blended with pristine water sourced from a 3000-foot-deep aquifer in Kaleheo. This water is unique because it is enriched with minerals from volcanic rocks, which enhance the flavor of the rum. Gunter, the owner of Kōloa Rum, emphasizes the importance of this process, stating that they “can’t cheat” or “cut corners.”
Kōloa Rum offers a wide range of rum varieties, including white, gold, dark, spiced, coconut, coffee, and chocolate. These options cater to different tastes and preferences, ensuring that there is something for everyone. Additionally, the company creates small-batch specialty rums, such as the Kōloa Kaua’i Reserve, aged for five years in American white oak barrels.
One of the unique aspects of Kōloa Rum is its collaboration with local agricultural businesses. For instance, the company partners with Lydgate Farms Kaua’i Chocolate to create chocolate-flavored rum. They soak roasted cacao nibs in white rum for 10-12 days, allowing the rum to extract the cacao flavor from the nibs. This collaboration benefits both parties, as Lydgate Farms can then use the rum-soaked nibs to create rum-flavored chocolate.
Similarly, Kaua’i Coffee, a renowned coffee farm and roaster, collaborates with Kōloa Rum to produce coffee-flavored rum. Kōloa Rum distillers create a cold brew, which they blend with white rum to create this unique and flavorful rum variety. In return, Kaua’i Coffee uses the aged rum barrels to create rum-flavored coffee, further strengthening the mutual partnership.
Kōloa Rum’s collaborations extend beyond local agricultural businesses. In 2012, Hawaiian Airlines approached Kōloa Rum to create a signature drink for their in-flight beverage program. This led to the creation of a refreshing Mai Tai cocktail. The partnership expanded in 2016 with the introduction of a Kōloa Rum POG (pineapple/orange/guava) rum punch. This year, Hawaiian Airlines launched a Kōloa Rum Pineapple Passion cocktail. These ready-to-drink rum cocktails are now available for purchase in retail stores outside of the airline, showcasing Kōloa Rum’s versatility and accessibility.
In addition to their rum offerings, Kōloa Rum has recently ventured into the canned seltzer market. They now offer low-alcohol-by-volume (ABV) guava, pineapple, coconut, and mango seltzers, providing consumers with more options and flavors to enjoy.
Behind Kōloa Rum’s success lies a story deeply rooted in Hawaiian history. The company’s origins can be traced back to the decline of the sugarcane industry in Hawaii. As labor costs rose after Hawaiʻi became a state in 1959, plantation owners moved their operations overseas, leading to the closure of most sugar mills by the 1990s. Kōloa Rum initially purchased cane sugar from local plantations, but with their closure, they were forced to source sugar from other states. However, Gunter emphasizes that this was never part of their plan, as Kōloa Rum aims to support local agriculture and preserve its Hawaiian identity.
Despite these challenges, Kōloa Rum flourished in the Hawaiian market. By 2010, their rum was available in bars, restaurants, hotels, and liquor stores across the islands. In 2018, the company was recognized as one of Hawaiʻi’s fastest-growing companies by The Garden Island newspaper.
As a result of their growth, Kōloa Rum has outgrown its original distillery in Kaleheo. They are currently in the process of building a new location in Old Kōloa Town, which will be twice the size of the previous distillery. This new site will include a cafe, tasting room, retail store, and a museum in a converted 1915 plantation house. The expansion is estimated to create 35-45 new jobs for locals and will offer distillery tours, tractor rides, and sugarcane crushing demonstrations.
Kōloa Rum’s commitment to preserving Hawaiian sugarcane heritage is also evident in its efforts to curate and grow 40 varieties of legacy Hawaiian sugarcane. These varieties date back to the early days of the sugarcane era and include varieties from the first Polynesian settlers and the first variety planted at Kōloa Mill in 1835. This dedication to Hawaiian heritage showcases Kōloa Rum’s deep connection to the land and its commitment to maintaining the island’s rich history.
Kōloa Rum is more than just a rum distillery. It embodies the spirit of Hawaii and the passion of its people. From its unique distillation process to its collaborations with local businesses, Kōloa Rum stands out as a testament to the vibrant and innovative spirit of the Hawaiian culture.
**Supporting Maui: Koloa Rum Company’s Commitment to Community**
Living on a remote island brings unique challenges and an even stronger need for mutual support. Gunter, the founder of Koloa Rum Company, understands this like no other. His mission has always been to create premium rum using locally sourced ingredients, and at the same time, give back to the community that has supported him throughout his journey.
In the spirit of this commitment, Koloa Rum Company recently hosted an online and in-store event on August 26 to support the residents of Maui who were affected by the devastating wildfires. The event turned out to be a resounding success, with over $44,000 raised, all of which was generously donated to the local nonprofit organization, Maui Strong. This donation will go a long way in helping the Lahaina community recover and rebuild.
The wildfires had wreaked havoc on Maui, causing widespread destruction and taking a toll on the lives of many residents. But in times of crisis, it is heartwarming to witness the solidarity and resilience of communities. Koloa Rum Company’s initiative is a shining example of this spirit, where businesses step forward to make a meaningful difference.
The Koloa Rum Company has always been deeply rooted in the Hawaiian landscape. They take immense pride in sourcing their ingredients locally, ensuring that they contribute to the sustainable growth of the island. Gunter’s vision is to create a self-sustaining ecosystem, where every step of the rum-making process happens onsite. From growing and harvesting the sugarcane for their small-batch single-origin organic rums to distilling, bottling, and selling, everything happens within the premises of the company. This approach not only ensures a quality product but also minimizes their carbon footprint.
Visiting the Kōloa Rum Company on Kaua’i is an experience that combines the pleasure of enjoying premium rum with a deep appreciation for the Hawaiian heritage. The company’s dedication to sustainable practices can be seen in their operations, and it is a testament to their commitment to the environment and the local community.
If you find yourself on the island of Kaua’i, make sure to pay a visit to the Koloa Rum Company. They are open from Monday to Saturday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, and are closed on Sundays. Located at 3-2087 Kaumualii Highway, Līhu’e, they are just a phone call away at 808-246-8900.
Let us raise a glass to Gunter and the Koloa Rum Company for their unwavering support to the Maui community. It serves as a reminder that a little kindness and assistance can go a long way in making a positive impact on people’s lives. Together, we can overcome any adversity and build stronger, more resilient communities.

Title: Spicing Up Wedding Traditions: Introducing the Fireball Girls
Are you tired of the same old, traditional flower girl routine at weddings? Well, one bride decided to break the mold and add a fiery twist to her special day. Jac Vanek, a social media content creator, came up with a unique idea to make her wedding ceremony a memorable experience for her guests. Instead of following the usual protocol, she introduced “Fireball girls” to her bridal party.
In a viral TikTok video that she posted on her social media account, two of her friends, dressed in stunning blue and red long dresses, danced down the aisle to the hit song “Fireball” by Pitbull. The energetic feeling in the air was infectious as the crowd joined in the dancing and merriment. Amidst the excitement, one voice in the video reminded everyone not to take the shots just yet, as they were waiting for Jac and Jared, the bride and groom, to make their grand entrance. It was a suspenseful moment as the guests held onto their little bottles, eager to toast to the couple’s happiness.
Keltie Knight, one of the wedding guests who portrayed a “Fireball girl,” captured the vibrant atmosphere in another TikTok video. Knight, accompanied by Becca Tobin, an actress and singer, revealed that the three girls host a weekly podcast called the LadyGang. This dynamic trio added their own flair to the already dazzling occasion.
Marissa Mullen, another content creator, also joined in on the fun and shared a video on TikTok, proudly raising her shot of Fireball. The wedding of the century, indeed!
The unique concept quickly caught the attention of Vanek’s followers, who shared their own thoughts and plans for their future weddings. Inspired by Jac’s idea, one TikToker named lorrie commented, “me but I’m gonna have 1 Fireball girl and 1 pink Whitney girl.” Another user, Lola Denvir, enthusiastically wrote, “I’m doing this at my wedding.”
