Michter’s Distillery, a Kentucky-based whiskey maker, has just achieved a monumental feat. They have been named the “World’s Most Admired Whiskey” by Drinks International, marking the first time an American brand has received this prestigious honor. Drinks International gathers a group of independent whiskey experts from around the world to evaluate brands based on various criteria such as quality, consistency, price-to-quality ratio, and marketing strength. Michter’s outshone its competitors and emerged as the winner.
This recognition is a significant milestone for American distilleries, which have been striving for decades to produce exceptional whiskeys. Joe Magliocco, the president of Michter’s, expressed his delight at the international recognition, stating, “To finally see this international recognition for a whiskey made in the US is absolutely wonderful.” It is a well-deserved acknowledgment for Michter’s, considering the brand’s rich history and commitment to excellence.
Magliocco and his team have come a long way since acquiring the Michter’s trademark for a mere $245 in the late ’90s. They resurrected the defunct distillery, which had a legacy tracing back to pre-Revolutionary War Pennsylvania, and established a new home in Shively, Kentucky. The team assembled top talent from the bourbon industry, ensuring their liquid would be of the highest quality.
Michter’s has continuously pushed boundaries and set records within the whiskey industry. In 2020, they made headlines with the sale of a single barrel for over $200,000, with proceeds going to Covid-related charity. The brand also unveiled its Celebration Sour Mash in 2013, a blend of ultra-aged bourbon and rye that was priced at $4000 per bottle, making it the most expensive American whiskey release at the time.
Despite these extraordinary accomplishments, Michter’s success is not limited to its high-end offerings. Their US 1 lineup of bourbon and rye includes a small batch bourbon aged for at least 8 years, priced between $40-$50. This demonstrates the brand’s commitment to producing accessible and delicious whiskeys.
Michter’s has also made waves in European markets, where American whiskey traditionally faced challenges. Their 10-year-old bourbon and rye can often be found on the top shelves of prestigious bars in London, Paris, and Berlin. This recognition as the “World’s Most Admired Whiskey” is being celebrated as a significant moment for American whiskey as a whole, signaling its growing prominence on the global stage.
Andrea Wilson, master of maturation at Michter’s, emphasized the impact of this achievement, stating, “I could not be prouder of what this means not only for Michter’s, but for the American whiskey community as a whole.” This recognition could pave the way for a brighter future for American whiskey worldwide.
Now, with this monumental accolade under their belt, Michter’s can confidently assert their position as the king of the global whiskey-making game. For whiskey enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike, Michter’s has undoubtedly earned its place among the most admired whiskey makers in the world.
