Lasso Motel’s 18-Year-Old Whiskey Wins Prestigious Best American Whiskey Award

During a recent blind tasting, Lasso Motel 18-Year American Straight Whiskey was awarded the title of the best American whiskey at the 2025 Ascot Awards. This honor also included being named Best in Show Ultimate Winner, distinguishing it as the top entry recognized among all participating spirits.

Produced by Dallas-based Dynasty Spirits, Lasso Motel 18-Year whiskey has an online retail price starting at $129.99 for a 750 milliliter bottle. The whiskey is notably high-proof at 121, featuring a mash bill of 99% corn and 1% malted barley, and is aged in used bourbon barrels at the Midwest Grain Products Distillery in Indiana. The flavor profile is said to begin with rich notes of new oak and transition into buttery toffee and sweet sugar-maple, finishing with hints of dried apricot.

Bourbon and spirits expert Fred Minnick, founder of the Ascot Awards, remarked that the victory exemplifies a recent trend in the whiskey industry, where the best products are no longer confined to traditional bourbon or rye. Innovative blends, including straight whiskeys and unique finishes, have been on the rise, with Lasso Motel serving as a prominent representation of this evolution.

Other notable results from the Ascot Awards included:

  • Bourbon of the Year: Old Soul Bourbon Tintype #1
  • Rye of the Year: Pinhook Vertical Series Rye, 9 Year
  • Scotch of the Year: Ardbeg Eureka!
  • Irish Whiskey of the Year: Redbreast 18 Year Old Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey
  • American Single Malt of the Year: The QuintEssential Special Release, Wine Club
  • Agave Spirit of the Year: Santa Almagia Tobala Joven
  • Rum of the Year: Rolling Fork 16 Year Trinidad Single Cask
  • Gin of the Year: Farmer’s Reserve Strength Gin
  • Vodka of the Year: Belvedere 10
  • Brandy of the Year: Wayward Cask 25 Year Calvados Pays D’Auge
  • Liqueur of the Year: Faretti Biscotti

Approximately 1,000 samples participated in this year’s competition, where they underwent blind tasting assessments based on various criteria such as appearance, aroma, taste, and finish. The top scorers moved on to a championship round, leading to live-streamed selections of the champions.

The ASCOT Awards were first established in 2021 by Minnick, who is an accomplished author with plans to release a new book next year titled Bottom Shelf: How a Forgotten Brand of Bourbon Saved One Man’s Life.

Founded by Desiree Reid, the distillery is nestled in New Zealand’s Crown Range Mountains, aiming to elevate the country’s spirits profile since its establishment in 2015. The Significance of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale’s Unconventional Victory at the World Beer Cup

When the World Beer Cup awards were announced recently, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. won gold for its flagship beer, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, in a surprising category: Extra Special Bitter. Although this beer has been renowned for 45 years and is celebrated for essentially creating the American Pale Ale style, winning in this category was unexpected.

To understand this, we need to explore how pale ales differ from Extra Special Bitters (E.S.B.). Historically, these two styles were often regarded as the same in England, with the beer referred to as pale ale in bottles and bitters on draft. Before clear identifiers emerged, customers would simply order a bitters, differentiating it from the sweeter mild ale that was also popular.

The term “bitters” evolved over time into three categories: Ordinary Bitters, Best or Special Bitters, and Extra Special Bitters. The E.S.B. designation was introduced by Fuller’s in 1971, but because early craft beer drinkers in the U.S. generally avoided beers labeled as bitter, many brewers opted to use the pale ale term instead.

Today, the World Beer Cup features several categories for pale ales and bitters, with guidelines that evolve each year. While Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is now labeled a legacy beer, its classification has shifted to fit the sub-category of American-style Extra Special Bitter, reflecting changing consumer tastes and brewing practices.

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is well-balanced, blending rich malt and robust hop flavors. When it debuted in the early 1980s, it was considered hop-forward, but compared to modern IPAs, it now appears more restrained. This balance is why pale ales remain a popular choice for various occasions.

If you’re looking to explore pale ales, Sierra Nevada’s original is readily available and still tastes nearly the same as when it was first introduced. Additionally, Faction Brewing’s Penske File Pale Ale stands out as an excellent West Coast pale ale. Firestone Walker’s Double Barrel Ale offers a great take on English-style pale ales, while Cellarmaker Brewing in San Francisco produces excellent options like Underneath the Pine and Super Mt. Nelson.

For those interested in the craft beer landscape, Sierra Nevada’s recent win highlights the intersection of tradition and evolving tastes in the brewing world.
