Kōloa Rum Company’s preference is to produce rum in individual batches.

The story of Kōloa Rum Company begins in Old Kōloa Town on the Hawaiian island of Kaua’i. This is where Kōloa Mill, the first successful sugar mill in the state, opened its doors in 1835 and operated until 1998. Despite Hawaii’s reputation as America’s largest grower of sugarcane in the 19th and 20th centuries, the rum industry did not flourish until the 21st century. Blame it on the prohibitionist ways of the missionaries or the sugar industry’s focus on exporting sugar, but locally-made rum was not flowing out of Hawaii like lava. It wasn’t until recently that the rum industry started to gain traction.

Kōloa Rum, named after the Hawaiian word for “tall cane,” has become a popular choice for rum enthusiasts worldwide. Today, the company sells its rum to nine countries and 37 states in North America. But it wasn’t an easy journey for Kōloa Rum Company. Bob Gunter, the president and CEO, spent a decade working in the sugar business before venturing into the rum industry. He moved to Kaua’i from San Francisco to work in sugarcane and worked his way up from cultivation to milling. Later in his career, he moved to Maui to help build two distilleries, one for rum and one for vodka. In 2007, Gunter returned to Kaua’i with a mission to support Hawaii’s sugar industry and conceptualized Kōloa Rum Company.

The company officially launched in 2009, setting up a distillery in Kalaheo, just four miles from Old Kōloa Town. They also established a tasting room and retail store at the Kilohana Plantation in Līhuʻe, which was once home to 22,000 acres of sugarcane. This historical land, once owned by the parent company of Kōloa Mill, now serves as a tourist attraction.

In the beginning, the retail store was the only place where you could purchase Kōloa rum. Spirit distributors in the area didn’t have high hopes for the company’s success, considering the competition from giants like Bacardi. However, Kōloa Rum Company focused on perfecting its distillation process and using high-quality ingredients to create an artisan product that stood out from mass-produced rums.

One of the key distinctions of Kōloa Rum is the use of raw cane sugar instead of molasses or sugarcane juice. This choice results in a sweeter rum with notes of caramel and vanilla. Gunter believes that this makes their rum smoother and more enjoyable to sip.

Another crucial factor in the quality of the rum is the distillation process. While most mass-produced rums use column stills for a faster and more continuous distillation, Kōloa Rum Company takes a different approach. They use a 1,210-gallon copper pot still, enabling them to be selective about the chemicals and impurities they remove during the distillation process. After the first distillation, they discard the “heads” and “tails” and keep only the sweetest part of the alcohol, known as the “heart.” This attention to detail and handcrafted approach sets Kōloa Rum Company apart.

Whether you’re a rum connoisseur or simply enjoy a good drink, Kōloa Rum is definitely worth a try. With its rich history rooted in Hawaii’s sugarcane industry and its commitment to producing high-quality rum, it’s no wonder that Kōloa Rum Company has found success. So, next time you’re enjoying a rum cocktail, raise your glass to the craft distillers at Kōloa Rum Company who made it all possible.

A Unique Process and Ingredients: The Story of Kōloa Rum

Kōloa Rum is not your average rum distillery. Located in Kaleheo, Hawaii, the company takes pride in its unique process and high-quality ingredients that set its products apart from the rest. From its collaboration with local agricultural businesses to its commitment to preserving Hawaiian sugarcane heritage, Kōloa Rum is changing the game in the world of rum production.

It all starts with the distillation, where Kōloa Rum uses a careful and traditional process to create its exceptional spirits. After distillation, the rum is blended with pristine water sourced from a 3000-foot-deep aquifer in Kaleheo. This water is unique because it is enriched with minerals from volcanic rocks, which enhance the flavor of the rum. Gunter, the owner of Kōloa Rum, emphasizes the importance of this process, stating that they “can’t cheat” or “cut corners.”

Kōloa Rum offers a wide range of rum varieties, including white, gold, dark, spiced, coconut, coffee, and chocolate. These options cater to different tastes and preferences, ensuring that there is something for everyone. Additionally, the company creates small-batch specialty rums, such as the Kōloa Kaua’i Reserve, aged for five years in American white oak barrels.

One of the unique aspects of Kōloa Rum is its collaboration with local agricultural businesses. For instance, the company partners with Lydgate Farms Kaua’i Chocolate to create chocolate-flavored rum. They soak roasted cacao nibs in white rum for 10-12 days, allowing the rum to extract the cacao flavor from the nibs. This collaboration benefits both parties, as Lydgate Farms can then use the rum-soaked nibs to create rum-flavored chocolate.

Similarly, Kaua’i Coffee, a renowned coffee farm and roaster, collaborates with Kōloa Rum to produce coffee-flavored rum. Kōloa Rum distillers create a cold brew, which they blend with white rum to create this unique and flavorful rum variety. In return, Kaua’i Coffee uses the aged rum barrels to create rum-flavored coffee, further strengthening the mutual partnership.

Kōloa Rum’s collaborations extend beyond local agricultural businesses. In 2012, Hawaiian Airlines approached Kōloa Rum to create a signature drink for their in-flight beverage program. This led to the creation of a refreshing Mai Tai cocktail. The partnership expanded in 2016 with the introduction of a Kōloa Rum POG (pineapple/orange/guava) rum punch. This year, Hawaiian Airlines launched a Kōloa Rum Pineapple Passion cocktail. These ready-to-drink rum cocktails are now available for purchase in retail stores outside of the airline, showcasing Kōloa Rum’s versatility and accessibility.

In addition to their rum offerings, Kōloa Rum has recently ventured into the canned seltzer market. They now offer low-alcohol-by-volume (ABV) guava, pineapple, coconut, and mango seltzers, providing consumers with more options and flavors to enjoy.

Behind Kōloa Rum’s success lies a story deeply rooted in Hawaiian history. The company’s origins can be traced back to the decline of the sugarcane industry in Hawaii. As labor costs rose after Hawaiʻi became a state in 1959, plantation owners moved their operations overseas, leading to the closure of most sugar mills by the 1990s. Kōloa Rum initially purchased cane sugar from local plantations, but with their closure, they were forced to source sugar from other states. However, Gunter emphasizes that this was never part of their plan, as Kōloa Rum aims to support local agriculture and preserve its Hawaiian identity.

Despite these challenges, Kōloa Rum flourished in the Hawaiian market. By 2010, their rum was available in bars, restaurants, hotels, and liquor stores across the islands. In 2018, the company was recognized as one of Hawaiʻi’s fastest-growing companies by The Garden Island newspaper.

As a result of their growth, Kōloa Rum has outgrown its original distillery in Kaleheo. They are currently in the process of building a new location in Old Kōloa Town, which will be twice the size of the previous distillery. This new site will include a cafe, tasting room, retail store, and a museum in a converted 1915 plantation house. The expansion is estimated to create 35-45 new jobs for locals and will offer distillery tours, tractor rides, and sugarcane crushing demonstrations.

Kōloa Rum’s commitment to preserving Hawaiian sugarcane heritage is also evident in its efforts to curate and grow 40 varieties of legacy Hawaiian sugarcane. These varieties date back to the early days of the sugarcane era and include varieties from the first Polynesian settlers and the first variety planted at Kōloa Mill in 1835. This dedication to Hawaiian heritage showcases Kōloa Rum’s deep connection to the land and its commitment to maintaining the island’s rich history.

Kōloa Rum is more than just a rum distillery. It embodies the spirit of Hawaii and the passion of its people. From its unique distillation process to its collaborations with local businesses, Kōloa Rum stands out as a testament to the vibrant and innovative spirit of the Hawaiian culture.

**Supporting Maui: Koloa Rum Company’s Commitment to Community**

Living on a remote island brings unique challenges and an even stronger need for mutual support. Gunter, the founder of Koloa Rum Company, understands this like no other. His mission has always been to create premium rum using locally sourced ingredients, and at the same time, give back to the community that has supported him throughout his journey.

In the spirit of this commitment, Koloa Rum Company recently hosted an online and in-store event on August 26 to support the residents of Maui who were affected by the devastating wildfires. The event turned out to be a resounding success, with over $44,000 raised, all of which was generously donated to the local nonprofit organization, Maui Strong. This donation will go a long way in helping the Lahaina community recover and rebuild.

The wildfires had wreaked havoc on Maui, causing widespread destruction and taking a toll on the lives of many residents. But in times of crisis, it is heartwarming to witness the solidarity and resilience of communities. Koloa Rum Company’s initiative is a shining example of this spirit, where businesses step forward to make a meaningful difference.

The Koloa Rum Company has always been deeply rooted in the Hawaiian landscape. They take immense pride in sourcing their ingredients locally, ensuring that they contribute to the sustainable growth of the island. Gunter’s vision is to create a self-sustaining ecosystem, where every step of the rum-making process happens onsite. From growing and harvesting the sugarcane for their small-batch single-origin organic rums to distilling, bottling, and selling, everything happens within the premises of the company. This approach not only ensures a quality product but also minimizes their carbon footprint.

Visiting the Kōloa Rum Company on Kaua’i is an experience that combines the pleasure of enjoying premium rum with a deep appreciation for the Hawaiian heritage. The company’s dedication to sustainable practices can be seen in their operations, and it is a testament to their commitment to the environment and the local community.

If you find yourself on the island of Kaua’i, make sure to pay a visit to the Koloa Rum Company. They are open from Monday to Saturday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, and are closed on Sundays. Located at 3-2087 Kaumualii Highway, Līhu’e, they are just a phone call away at 808-246-8900.

Let us raise a glass to Gunter and the Koloa Rum Company for their unwavering support to the Maui community. It serves as a reminder that a little kindness and assistance can go a long way in making a positive impact on people’s lives. Together, we can overcome any adversity and build stronger, more resilient communities.

Playboy is introducing a new vodka seltzer into the ready-to-drink alcohol market.

**Playboy Launches New Line of Vodka Seltzers**

Playboy, the well-known male-oriented lifestyle and entertainment brand, is branching out and expanding its product offerings. The Illinois-based company recently announced its foray into the alcoholic beverage industry with the launch of a new line of canned vodka seltzers called Play Hard.

The ready-to-drink Play Hard line features four vibrant flavors: mango dragon fruit, grapefruit yuzu, apple prickly pear, and pineapple passion fruit. This exciting expansion is a joint venture between Playboy Spirits, a division of the PLBY Group, and Spirits Investment Partners (SIP), a Chicago-based alcohol brand development company.

This collaboration between Playboy Spirits and SIP was first revealed in January when the PLBY Group secured over $13 million in funding. The goal of this investment was to accelerate growth in the alcohol beverage category and pave the way for exciting ventures like Play Hard.

Marc Bushala, CEO of Playboy Spirits and SIP, expressed the brand’s enthusiasm for this new venture, stating, “Playboy Spirits welcomes a new generation as we unveil the next chapter in hard seltzers with PLAY HARD — designed for those who seek great flavor, premium quality, and style.” He further added that Play Hard captures Playboy’s legacy as a bon vivant lifestyle brand, inviting everyone to express themselves, live boldly, and enjoy life to the fullest.

In line with the growing trend of healthier beverage options, Play Hard vodka seltzers are formulated to be low in calories. Each 12-ounce can contains just 110 calories, 3 grams of carbs, and 4.5% alcohol by volume (ABV). This places it in the same league as other popular hard seltzer brands such as High Noon Hard Seltzer (4.5% ABV) and Truly Vodka Soda (5% ABV).

Playboy Spirits has also paid homage to its iconic logo by branding the Play Hard seltzer cans and packaging with a “Bunny Head” logo, reminiscent of Andy Warhol’s famous 1989 pop-art painting. This connection to Playboy’s history and artistry adds an extra layer of allure to these refreshing beverages.

Marked as Playboy Spirits’ entry into the global ready-to-drink (RTD) market, Play Hard aims to connect with Playboy’s fashion-forward Gen Z and Millennial audience while showcasing its expansive collection of original art. Initially launching in Miami and Orlando in September, the brand plans to expand its presence to other markets throughout 2024.

For those unable to find Play Hard seltzers in their local stores, the drink will be available for online purchase at playhardseltzer.com, ensuring that everyone can experience the enticing flavors of Playboy’s newest venture.

Overall, this latest expansion into the alcoholic beverage industry is just one of the many innovative moves the PLBY Group has made recently. The company has successfully transitioned from the revamp and closure of Playboy’s print magazine in 2020 to establishing a strong digital presence with the relaunch of Playboy magazine as a digital publication.

Additionally, the PLBY Group has delved into new ventures, such as the launch of Centerfold, a digital creator platform that competes with popular subscription service OnlyFans. With content distribution in approximately 180 countries, Playboy continues to evolve and captivate audiences worldwide.

Beyond spirits and digital media, the PLBY Group has also ventured into the fashion industry with its acquisition of luxury lingerie brand Honey Birdette. The multimillion-dollar purchase in June 2021 further solidifies Playboy’s position as a lifestyle brand, encompassing various aspects of adult entertainment, fashion, and now, delicious and refreshing vodka seltzers.

As Playboy continues to reinvent itself in the modern world, it remains a symbol of freedom, expression, and enjoyment. With Play Hard vodka seltzers as the latest addition to their expanding lineup, Playboy offers a taste of elegance, pleasure, and the spirit of playfulness to consumers around the globe.

Title: The Evolution of Playboy: Expanding Horizons and Embracing Change

Introduction:

Playboy, the iconic brand known for its provocative magazines and entertainment empire, has undergone significant transformations in recent years. From strategic partnerships and brand collaborations to venturing into new markets, the PLBY Group, which owns Playboy, is determined to redefine itself as a lifestyle brand. In this blog post, we explore the journey and evolution of Playboy, highlighting its comeback in the changing landscape of modern society.

Parting Ways and Strategic Licensing:

The PLBY Group, under its umbrella of acquisitions, made headlines in 2019 by purchasing the online lingerie and apparel retailer, Yandy.com. However, the company surprised many this year when it announced that it had sold Yandy.com for $3 million. While the reasons behind this decision were undisclosed, it demonstrated the PLBY Group’s commitment to focus on other avenues for growth.

In recent years, the company has engaged in strategic licensing deals with various fashion brands and celebrities. Its collaboration with MISSGUIDED, a fast fashion company, resulted in the creation of the “Playboy Reloaded” capsule collection, featuring 76 stylish pieces. The PLBY Group also joined forces with October’s Very Own, a fashion line owned by Canadian rapper Drake, for the creation of the “Symbols of Prestige” capsule collection. Additionally, an exciting rock ‘n roll capsule collection was launched in collaboration with John Richmond, an Italian clothing line.

Global Partnership and Expansion:

The PLBY Group’s chief business and licensing officer, Allison Kopcha, emphasized the momentum gained through securing top talent and expanding brand collaborations. These strategic partnerships have helped the organization engage a broader audience, thereby increasing brand relevance. By venturing into new categories and regions, Playboy is evolving from its traditional image and adapting to a changing market demand.

Reviving The Playboy Club and Beyond:

One of the most ambitious projects undertaken by Playboy was the opening of the Playboy Club in Midtown Manhattan in 2018. This venture aimed to revive Playboy’s hospitality business and redefine the brand as a luxurious destination. However, the club faced challenges and closed its doors in 2019. Despite this setback, the PLBY Group continues to explore opportunities and redefine Playboy’s role in the hospitality industry.

Taking a moment to reflect, the passing of Playboy’s founder, Hugh Hefner, in 2017 marked the end of an era. However, the PLBY Group’s innovations and focus on lifestyle branding serve as a testament to Hefner’s legacy. Playboy is not just about the iconic bunny logo or the magazine’s legacy; it has become a symbol of evolution and adaptation in the face of changing times.

Conclusion:

The PLBY Group’s journey with Playboy highlights the brand’s determination to remain relevant and adapt to a rapidly evolving market. By parting ways with Yandy.com and embracing strategic collaborations with fashion brands and celebrities, Playboy is widening its horizons and catering to new audiences. The refocusing on lifestyle branding signals Playboy’s eagerness to revive its hospitality business and explore other ventures beyond its traditional offerings. As Playboy continues to redefine itself, its evolution stands as a reminder of the power of adaptation and embracing change, in both business and life in general.

There are nine recently launched premium bourbon and whiskey options available for purchase, including the well-known brand Kentucky Owl.

Fall in Kentucky means one thing: the release of new bourbon bottles! While National Bourbon Month is traditionally celebrated in September, distillers in Kentucky spread the joy throughout the entire season. These special premium releases have bourbon collectors eagerly waiting in line for a chance to purchase them. Today, I want to share some of the best and hottest new bourbon releases that you should consider trying and buying at your local stores.

One notable release that caught my attention is Kentucky Owl’s Maighstir Edition. This is actually their third international collaboration, and it was created by John Rhea and Maureen Robinson, a Scotch whisky expert. Rhea has since retired, and Robinson has taken over as the master blender. Together, they crafted a unique bourbon that leans into the flavors of Scotch. Maighstir is a blend of 4-year-old, 5-year-old, 8-year-old, and 9-year-old Kentucky straight bourbons. The goal was to convey a Scottish-inspired flavor profile. Robinson explains, “Our latest limited edition release exemplifies the dedication of Kentucky Owl to offer bourbon enthusiasts a glimpse into the world of Scotch whiskies. It has the citrus-perfumed floral green notes with hints of sweetness and oak reminiscent of a lighter style Scotch but still keeping all the credentials of a bourbon.” Maighstir is 100 proof with a suggested retail price of $150, and it’s available globally, but in limited amounts. The decision to create a bourbon that tastes like Scotch was made to open a door to millions of Scotch drinkers and to provide bourbon fans with something a little different.

Kentucky Owl has even bigger plans for the future. Construction is set to begin next year on the Kentucky Owl Park in Bardstown, a 420-acre distillery and tourism campus that will serve as the brand’s home. This expansion will include two distilleries on-site, one for Kentucky Owl and another for the Wiseman brand. The Kentucky Owl distillery alone will be capable of producing 30,000 barrels a year, while the Wiseman distillery will have three times that capacity. This means that in the future, we may see a lot more Kentucky Owl bourbon available for purchasing.

Another exciting release this fall is Ascension, the first Kentucky bourbon from Heaven’s Door Spirits, the brand founded by Bob Dylan. Ascension is a blend of two Kentucky straight bourbons produced at Heaven’s Door Distillery. It’s a non-chill filtered bourbon aged for over five years, blended in small batches, and bottled at 92 proof. Tasting notes describe it having a nose of baked bread, buttered popcorn, and dried fruit, with a complex palate that includes notes of caramel, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and black pepper. Ascension has a suggested retail price of $54.99 and can be found in stores and online at heavensdoor.com. The bottles feature graphics that mimic iron metalworks, paying homage to Bob Dylan’s talents as a musician and artist.

Dixon Dedman, the Kentucky blender who revived the Kentucky Owl brand before selling it to Stoli, also has some exciting releases from his new label, 2XO. Last year, Dedman introduced two small batch blends, The Phoenix Blend and The Innkeeper’s Blend, which won several awards at whiskey competitions. Now, he’s launching American Oak and The Tribute Blend. American Oak combines charred oak with a moderate amount of rye in the mashbill, resulting in a palate of rich caramel, toffee, savory roasted nuts, and a lingering mild spice. This ongoing blend in the Oak Series has a suggested retail price of $49.99. The Tribute Blend is the latest small batch release from the Icon Series, composed of Kentucky straight bourbon whiskeys from two different distilling partners, one with 35% rye and the other with 16-18% rye.

As the temperature drops and the leaves change colors, the excitement of new bourbon releases fills the air in Kentucky. These premium bottles offer bourbon enthusiasts and collectors the opportunity to experience unique flavors and profiles. Whether you’re a fan of the traditional Kentucky bourbon or curious to explore the world of Scotch-inspired bourbons, these releases have something for everyone. So, mark your calendars, explore your local stores, and enjoy the autumn season with a glass of these exceptional bourbons.

The finish reveals a delightful citrus peel and cider apple fragrance. At 116.42 proof, it is a whiskey that truly tantalizes the taste buds.

A Tale of Two Islands Bourbon is a follow-up to Barrell’s renowned 2018 release, Tale of Two Islands Rum. This unique blend of straight bourbons is finished in peated Islay single malt barrels, resulting in an exquisite fusion of flavors. With hints of smoked malt, grilled peach, and coconut macaron, the nose sets the stage for an extraordinary palate experience. At 118.22 proof, this release is a testament to Barrell Craft Spirits’ commitment to innovation and quality.

While Barrell Craft Spirits dazzles whiskey enthusiasts with their fall releases, Copper & Kings introduces their first-ever bourbon. Known primarily for their brandy, Copper & Kings Bourbon is a remarkable addition to their repertoire. A blend of 5-, 10-, and 15-year-old bourbons finished in American apple brandy barrels for a year, it showcases their expertise and craftsmanship. The tasting notes evoke images of cracked pepper, fresh cut apple, and classic cherry, creating a rich and complex flavor profile. Priced at $65, this bourbon is a steal.

To celebrate the release of Copper & Kings Bourbon, the distillery will host a party on October 19th at their location in the Butchertown neighborhood in Louisville, Kentucky. This free event, starting at 6 p.m., is a perfect opportunity to immerse oneself in the spirit of the brand and raise a glass to this significant milestone.

As we embrace the autumn season, these exceptional releases beckon to be enjoyed by whiskey enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike. Whether it’s the enticing array of blends from Barrell Craft Spirits or the debut of Copper & Kings Bourbon, the fall lineup promises an unforgettable experience for the senses. Cheers to the art of crafting extraordinary spirits!

According to the New York World Spirits Competition, the title for the finest whiskey in the world is awarded to…

My Ever-Changing Whisk(e)y Favorites – The Best Whiskey of 2023

As someone deeply involved in the whiskey industry, I am frequently asked about my favorite whisk(e)y. It’s a difficult question to answer because my preference often depends on various factors such as the season, my location, and even my mood on any given day. Just like any whiskey enthusiast, I am constantly exploring new whiskies and my opinions are constantly evolving.

To emphasize the ever-changing nature of what constitutes the “best whiskey,” a small family-owned distillery in Kentucky has recently made big news. 15 Stars, a brand founded by a father and son team, has consistently impressed with their exceptional bourbons and ryes over the past few years. Their dedication and craftsmanship have earned them the prestigious title of “best whiskey” at the renowned New York World Spirits Competition for 2023.

As an influential figure in the spirits industry, I was excited to see this recognition, especially since I frequently recommend their whiskeys as personal favorites depending on the specific day and mood. The 15 Stars American rye triumphed over strong competition to secure the coveted title of “Best Whiskey” this year in New York. But what exactly does this mean? As one of the head judges, allow me to break it down for you.

To claim this honor, the whiskey underwent four double-blind tastings, enduring scrutiny from expert judges, leading bartenders, and industry insiders who shape the world of whiskey behind the scenes. I can personally attest that this rye whiskey from a small distillery in Kentucky surpassed an impressive array of well-known whiskies on the market, which is no small feat.

Now, let’s delve into the tasting experience of the best whiskey from the 2023 New York World Spirits Competition. Here are the details:

– ABV: 52.5%

– Average Price: $89

The newly released whiskey from 15 STARS is a blend of ryes aged between six, seven, and eight years in Kentucky, Indiana, and Tennessee. The name “First West” pays homage to these states, which were considered the “West” during the formative years of the United States in the late 1700s and early 1800s.

Now, let’s talk about the tasting notes:

Nose: The aroma of deep winter spices such as clove, anise, cinnamon, and nutmeg intertwine with hints of Earl Grey tea, dried cranberry, dried cherry, and a touch of sour plum. Subtle notes of dry grassy fall leaves and orchard barks add complexity, with a whisper of roasting herbs.

Palate: The initial sip reveals notes of apricot jam atop buttermilk scones dusted with cinnamon, transitioning smoothly to the taste of dry oolong tea leaves, sweet smudging sage, creamed honey, and a touch of ginger tobacco. This beautiful medley is further enhanced by a delicate dark chocolate sauce infused with cardamom and clove.

Finish: A sharp bite of gingery tobacco anchors the finish, accompanied by a lingering bitterness of dark chocolate. The journey concludes with a rich blend of cherrywood and sour plum sauce, faint echoes of the opening winter spices, dry fall leaves, and hints of old cellar floors.

In summary, this whiskey is a well-rounded and enjoyable sipping experience, boasting excellent depth of flavors. For those seeking a heightened experience, try adding a dash of ice or a drop of water to enhance the earthy notes, revealing creamy eggnog spice and hints of mulled cider and wines with a soft fruit cake undertone.

For those interested in acquiring a bottle, it is currently available on Seelbachs.com. However, I must warn you that it won’t last long. You likely have just a few hours to snatch a bottle before they are sold out. If you miss out, keep an eye out for the next batch release.

Vodka eyeballing and consuming a Borg come with their own set of hazards.

Title: Avoiding Spooky Mishaps: Why You Definitely Shouldn’t Put Alcohol in Your Eyeballs

Introduction:

As Halloween approaches, many are gearing up for spooky parties and delicious themed drinks. However, one question recently caught my attention and made me ponder: Can you actually get drunk by putting alcohol on your eyeball? While my first instinct was to adamantly discourage such a dangerous practice, my scientific curiosity led me to delve deeper into the subject. Through extensive research, it becomes abundantly clear that alcohol and eyeballs should never mix. In fact, the American Academy of Ophthalmology issued a public statement back in 2010 warning against the harmful effects of “vodka eyeballing.” So let’s take a closer look at why you should absolutely avoid this and explore the potential consequences.

The Myth of Alcohol and Eyeball Absorption:

To understand the concept behind vodka eyeballing, we need to grasp how alcohol affects the body. Typically, alcohol is consumed orally and enters the bloodstream through the stomach lining or the small intestine. From there, it circulates throughout the body, including the brain, where it elicits its intoxicating effects. However, the notion behind vodka eyeballing suggests that alcohol could be absorbed through the capillaries in the eyes, directly entering the bloodstream near the brain. While this may sound intriguing, the reality is far from it.

The Reality: Minimal Absorption with Severe Consequences:

Physicians and experts affirm that very little alcohol is actually absorbed through the eyes. Attempting to force alcohol absorption in this manner poses severe risks to various parts of the eyeball. The cornea, vision, and overall eye health can be greatly compromised. In 2010, the American Academy of Ophthalmology highlighted these dangers and warned against even considering this practice. Despite the statement being over a decade old, the fact that this question still arises in classrooms demonstrates the need for continued awareness and education.

Beyond Vodka Eyeballing: A Rise in Risky Drinking Trends:

While vodka eyeballing may have faded into the past, we continually witness new risky drinking trends emerging among university students. One such trend gaining popularity is known as blackout rage gallons, or “borgs” for short. These concoctions consist of a full fifth of vodka, mixed with water and sweet flavoring. It’s essential to recognize the risks associated with these extreme drinking practices.

Understanding the Risks: Alcohol Consumption and Blackouts:

A typical “borg” contains the alcohol equivalent of sixteen standard drinks. Consuming more than four or five standard drinks in one sitting is considered high-risk drinking, leading to impaired physical and mental abilities due to increased blood alcohol concentration. This level, 0.08% alcohol by volume, legally classifies people as impaired. Consuming a “borg” can catapult individuals to three or four times this legally impaired level, resulting in blackouts. During a blackout, a person’s cognitive, sensory, and physical abilities are severely impaired, leading to accidents, loss of awareness, and sudden unconsciousness.

Conclusion: Prioritizing Safety over Risky Drinking:

While it is reassuring that vodka eyeballing seems to have largely become a thing of the past, it is crucial to remain vigilant against new ways of risky drinking, such as “borgs.” If ever faced with the pressure to engage in such practices, remember to prioritize your safety and well-being. Risks arise from various factors, and each person’s susceptibility may differ. Educate yourself, stay informed about the dangers, and never hesitate to assert your right to make responsible choices regarding alcohol consumption.

Title: Challenging and Risky Drinking Trends on College Campuses

Introduction:

College life is often associated with new experiences, freedom, and self-discovery. However, amidst the excitement and opportunities, some students engage in risky behaviors that can have severe consequences. Two recent drinking trends, vodka eyeballing and gallon drinking, have gained popularity among college students. While these trends seem like harmless fun at first glance, they pose significant risks to individuals’ health and well-being. This blog post aims to shed light on the dangers associated with these trends and the importance of making responsible choices.

Vodka Eyeballing: A Potential Cause of Ocular Injuries:

In 2014, Bosmia, Griessenauer, and Tubbs published an article in the Journal of Injury and Violence Research, highlighting the potential risks of vodka eyeballing. This practice involves pouring vodka directly into the eye, with the aim of achieving a quicker and more intense buzz. The eyeball’s sensitive tissues are not designed to withstand exposure to high alcohol concentrations, making them susceptible to severe damage. This behavior can lead to corneal abrasions, vision impairment, and even permanent blindness. It is essential to educate students about the potential consequences of vodka eyeballing to discourage this dangerous trend.

Gallon Drinking: A Rising Trend:

A more recent trend on college campuses is gallon drinking, as highlighted in an article by Alonso in 2023. This trend involves consuming an entire gallon of alcohol within a specific time frame. The allure of this challenge stems from its competitive nature and the desire to prove one’s drinking prowess. Gallon drinking, however, puts individuals at risk of consuming extremely high levels of alcohol in a short period. With alcohol impairing judgment and inhibitions, excessive consumption can lead to alcohol poisoning, blackouts, and other life-threatening consequences.

Understanding Blood Alcohol Content (BAC):

To comprehend the potential dangers of these trends, it is crucial to understand blood alcohol content (BAC), as explained by the University of Toledo’s Substance Use and Recovery Support Services. BAC is a measure of the amount of alcohol present in a person’s bloodstream. Different BAC levels result in varying degrees of impairment. For example, a BAC of 0.08% is considered legally drunk in many states. Students should be aware that gallon drinking and vodka eyeballing can rapidly elevate BAC levels, leading to dangerous intoxication and potentially fatal consequences.

Taking Responsibility: A Focus on College-Aged Drinking:

The college years are a time of exploration and self-discovery, and alcohol consumption often plays a role in social interactions. However, it is essential for students to adopt responsible drinking habits. Merrill and Carey’s article in Alcohol Research: Current Reviews emphasizes the significance of promoting responsible drinking behaviors among college-aged individuals. This includes understanding the risks associated with excessive alcohol consumption, setting limits, and establishing healthier coping mechanisms.

Conclusion:

While college offers numerous exciting experiences, it is crucial to prioritize personal safety and make responsible choices. Trends like vodka eyeballing and gallon drinking may appear enticing, but the risks they pose to physical and mental health cannot be understated. By spreading awareness about the potential consequences and educating students on responsible alcohol consumption, we can create a safer environment on college campuses. Let’s work together to shift the focus from risky drinking practices to positive and enjoyable experiences during these formative years.

Review of Basil Hayden’s Malted Rye Whiskey

If you consider yourself a whiskey enthusiast who pays close attention to the intricacies of your favorite distilleries, then you’ve probably noticed a gradual shift towards malted rye in recent years. However, if you’re more of a beer connoisseur, you may have assumed that malted rye has always been a part of the distilling process, as beer is primarily brewed with malted grains. This distinction is particularly important in the world of rye whiskey, as traditional American ryes have always been made from unmalted rye grain, resulting in the spicy and dry profile we associate with this spirit today. However, distilleries are now increasingly turning to malting in order to transform the flavor profile of rye whiskey. This is evident in the newly announced Basil Hayden Malted Rye Whiskey from Jim Beam.

This new release is credited to Freddie Noe, the eighth-generation master in charge of innovation at Beam’s distilling operation. While some distilleries use a combination of traditional rye and malted rye, Noe chose to craft this whiskey exclusively from malted rye, resulting in a 100% malted rye mash bill. This departure from the traditional 51% Kentucky rye style allows the whiskey to showcase the unique flavor profile of malted rye without any other influences. Described as having “a more subtle, mellow spice with delicate sweet and floral notes,” this whiskey represents the refined side of rye.

It’s fitting that the Basil Hayden brand was chosen for this experiment, as it traditionally highlights Beam’s higher-rye bourbon mash bill. The company recommends enjoying this whiskey neat, which is understandable given its low 40% ABV (80 proof). Priced at $60 MSRP, it offers an interesting option for whiskey enthusiasts looking to explore the world of malted rye.

In the interest of full disclosure, I must admit that I have mixed feelings about whiskeys that heavily rely on malted rye. My preference for rye whiskey was developed through exposure to high-rye brands with mash bills containing 95-100% rye from distilleries like MGP of Indiana and Alberta Distillers Ltd. As a result, I have always gravitated towards the bold, spicy, and potentially abrasive side of the grain. Rye whiskeys featuring a significant amount of malted rye tend to come across as sweeter to me, with a stronger emphasis on the grain itself, often with toasty or doughy flavors. Over time, I have actively sought out rye whiskeys that do not contain malted rye.

With that context in mind, let’s dive into the tasting experience of the Basil Hayden Malted Rye. On the nose, the whiskey offers a delicate impression of classic rye grain, with hints of pumpernickel, light honey, caraway, mixed peppercorn, and subtle florals reminiscent of lavender. Unlike what I’ve come to expect from malted barley, this nose doesn’t display significant malt sweetness or doughiness. It’s not an assertive profile, which is to be expected from any Basil Hayden whiskey, but the delicate presentation is quite enjoyable.

Moving on to the palate, this whiskey remains light and delicate, in line with the typical Basil Hayden style. The rye flavors are subtly herbaceous and grassy, with underlying notes of honey, light pine, and syrupy pears. It doesn’t possess the intense maltiness or bready character often found in malted rye whiskeys, even those that incorporate only a portion of malted rye. Instead, it feels like a subtle evolution of the traditional rye style. This is necessary for a premium brand like Basil Hayden, with its low proof point, as ease of drinking is paramount. While the character may not leap out of the glass, it delivers a pleasurable tasting experience.

In conclusion, the Basil Hayden Malted Rye represents a departure from the traditional rye whiskey profile, showcasing the more subtle and refined side of malted rye. While it may not align perfectly with my personal preferences, it offers a unique option for those looking to explore the nuances of this increasingly prominent ingredient in the distilling world. Ultimately, the true judge of this whiskey’s success will be the whiskey enthusiasts themselves, as they embark on their own tasting journey and discover whether it aligns with their own palates.

Title: The Unconventional Charm of Basil Hayden Malted Rye

Introduction: A Pleasant Little Diversion

Basil Hayden Malted Rye is an enigmatic whiskey that leaves many pondering its purpose. Known for its subtle and unassuming character, it fails to make a bold statement in classic cocktails, leaving enthusiasts questioning its potential. Neat drinking, as recommended by Beam, might be the answer. However, in a market where bolder and higher-value brands from Beam exist, this poses a challenge for Basil Hayden. Despite this, the whiskey does have a unique quality that sets it apart – a well-composed rye that offers a gentle introduction to the diverse flavors of malted rye.

The Dilemma: A Clash of Value Propositions

When faced with a bottle of Basil Hayden Malted Rye, the question that arises is, “What do I do with this?” This whiskey lacks the assertiveness required for classic cocktails, making it a puzzling choice for mixologists. Neat drinking seems like the logical solution, appreciating the whiskey’s nuances without dilution. Nevertheless, this approach contradicts the value proposition of Basil Hayden Malted Rye, as other bold and high-value options from Beam are readily available. In this regard, the whiskey finds itself in a precarious position, competing for attention in a crowded marketplace.

The Subtle Charm of Basil Hayden Malted Rye

Although it may not offer the same bang for your buck as a bottle of Knob Creek, Basil Hayden Malted Rye presents a concrete novel element that shouldn’t be overlooked. This well-composed rye whiskey possesses a unique and gentle character, making it an ideal choice for those seeking an unchallenging and approachable drinking experience. The inherent flavors of malted rye are artfully showcased in this expression, providing a gateway to an often underappreciated aspect of whiskey. It may not be the boldest or most economical choice, but it does have its charm.

Conclusion: A Whiskey Worth Exploring

In the realm of whiskey, Basil Hayden Malted Rye stands out as an unconventional choice. While it may not excel in every aspect, there is value to be found in its understated nature. As a rye that caters to those seeking a lighter introduction to the flavors of malted rye, it provides a distinct experience. Priced at $60 MSRP for a 750 ml bottle, it may not be the most cost-effective option, but it offers a touch of novelty that some whiskey enthusiasts may appreciate. As with any unique spirit, it’s worth exploring for those who enjoy venturing off the beaten path.
