Beachwood Brewing Expands Its Horizons: Now Serving Craft Rum, Gin, and Vodka Cocktails in Long Beach

Beachwood Brewing is a renowned brewery, celebrated for achievements such as being named the World Beer Cup Champion Large Brewpub at the World Beer Cup Awards in 2016, and securing silver and bronze medals at the Great American Beer Festival in 2023. Read more about their milestone anniversary.

The brewery is now venturing into the spirits sector, introducing its own line of gins, rums, and vodkas at Beachwood Brewing & Distilling in Long Beach.

“Diversification was key for us. We didn’t want to limit ourselves to just beer; exploring other types of alcoholic beverages seemed like a natural progression. With our extensive experience in brewing, we decided to venture into spirits rather than wine,” explained Julian Shrago, the founder, co-owner, and brewmaster at Beachwood Brewing.

Recently, Beachwood Brewing & Distilling launched their distillery cocktail program. Beginning August 14, they started offering cocktails made with their housemade gin, rum, and vodka in Long Beach.

Beachwood Brewing & Distilling, best known for their award-winning beers, expanded their offerings with the official launch of their distillery cocktail program in Long Beach on Friday, Aug. 16, 2024. Starting Aug. 14, patrons have enjoyed cocktails featuring housemade gin, rum, and vodka.

Since its inception in 2022, this Beachwood outpost has offered food and beer on tap. The new addition of a distillery cocktail program on Aug. 14 provides unique drinks crafted with spirits distilled on-site in a 150-gallon, four-plate copper column still.

At Beachwood, the emphasis on gin, rum, and vodka is strategic.

“Gin is a big focal point of what we’re doing at the distillery. Gin is a very culinary cocktail, driven by botanicals in the same way that much of cooking is,” he explained.

Shrago is also a fan of Tiki drinks so rum was a must, while vodka appealed to them because of its clean and versatile nature that can be used in many drinks.

“We were very curious about this too. Could we do it? Should we do it? And what do we really have to lose by trying?” Shrago said.

There are about two dozen cocktails on the new menu and some of the highlights include creations like the Saturn, a blend of house gin with passionfruit, lemon, and orgeat. There’s the Chi Chi, which is a twist on the classic piña colada made with house vodka, pineapple, coconut cream, and lime. Another noteworthy drink is the 1944 Mai Tai, a Tiki classic made with rum, lime, orgeat, and orange curaçao. The menu includes other classic cocktails like the gin and tonic, made with tonic water created in-house.

“We have multiple scratch-made tonic waters and several different types of gin. So it’s almost kind of like choose your own adventure when it comes to gin and tonic at our distillery,” he said.

While Beachwood is still primarily known for beers, Shrago believes that beer enthusiasts will appreciate their cocktails just as much.

“I’m sure they’ll sense the dedication, extensive research, and intention in every beverage,” he stated.

Redemption Sur Lee Rye Whiskey: Revolutionizing the Art of Aging

Redemption Sur Lee Rye Whiskey

Redemption Whiskey is reinforcing its Sur Lee straight rye whiskey as a constant offering in its Specialty Series portfolio, signaling a critical achievement for this distinct iteration with a novel maturation technique. The choice is a reaction to rising appeal from both avid aficionados and new patrons, as stated by the entity.

Sur Lie is a French winemaking method where wine is matured on its lees, or spent yeast cells, to bring about additional complexity and a richer texture. Inspired by this, Redemption has adjusted the approach for this specific rye whiskey by integrating so-called “whiskey lees” into the barrels prior to aging, enriching the whiskey’s richness and flavor nuances. (Hence the name “Sur Lee.”)

“What initially attracted me to this technique was its untapped possibility,” Alan Kennedy, Redemption Whiskey’s master blender, tells Forbes. “No one had ever utilized it in whiskey before, and it presented a unique chance to enhance rye’s intricacy and transform the whiskey into something distinctly extraordinary.”

The result is a flavor profile that is both deep and complex, Kennedy describes. “The result is a whiskey with rich, nuanced layers of flavor evolving with each sip,” he explains. “You’ll find floral notes up front, followed by a nutty backdrop. Then decadent, buttery flavors of toasted marshmallow, maple and nutmeg. All of this is perfectly balanced with a lingering spicy finish that leaves a lasting impression.”

Kennedy also acknowledges the challenges and learning curve involved in developing this new technique.

“When we first conceived this expression at Redemption, we were venturing into uncharted territory,” Kennedy says. “We weren’t certain how the whiskey lees would influence our rye mash bill, so our biggest challenge was understanding the impact of this technique and finding the right balance. With such an unconventional approach, it was crucial to ensure the process didn’t overshadow the essence of our rye but rather pushed its boundaries.”

Redemption Sur Lee begins with a classic pre-Prohibition rye mash bill, featuring 95% rye and 5% barley content with an ABV of approximately 47%.

“We were also challenged by the techniques needed to create the whiskey,” Kennedy says. “With a new-to-world expression comes new-to-world techniques needed to create it. Almost every step in the whiskey making process had to be modified and new methods created.

“As the whiskey ages, we periodically rotate the barrels to ensure the backset continues to naturally interact with the liquid,” Kennedy says. “The result is a rye whiskey with layers of unexpected flavors and notes that are truly unique.”

By introducing a never-before-seen technique, Kennedy says he’s excited to see what inspiration this might spark in the industry.

“Within the whiskey industry, we’ve seen many ways that the wine category has influenced whiskey-making, most notably through the use of various casks to secondarily age whiskey and enhance its flavor profile,” Kennedy says. “However, we haven’t seen wine techniques influence whiskey in the way that the Sur Lee process did for us. We anticipate that more whiskey brands will begin to explore ways to combine these two worlds, just as we did, to further push the boundaries of the category.”

Tragic End: Husband Dies After Fifth Poisoned Root Beer, Allegedly by Wife and Daughter Duo, Prosecutors Claim

An Indiana man was reportedly poisoned by his wife and stepdaughter over a period of two months before succumbing on their fifth attempt, according to police statements.

Harold “Peanut” Allen, aged 52, met his demise on 22 December 2022 after consuming a root beer that contained ethylene glycol, an odorless, transparent, and sweet liquid commonly used in antifreeze.

While his obituary mentioned that he “passed away suddenly,” investigations have unveiled that his death had been anticipated by his wife, Marsha Allen, 52, and her daughter, Ashley Jones, 30, as claimed by authorities.

The prosecutors have indicated that on 14 September 2022, Jones purportedly purchased pong pong seeds via eBay. A single seed from this plant can deliver a lethal dose of cerberin, which is toxic enough to deem the plant as the “suicide tree.”

The duo is said to have crushed the seeds with a coffee grinder and incorporated them into brownies they made on November 26, 2022.

According to court filings, on the same day, Allen’s wife sent her daughter an image of Allen with a partially eaten brownie on a paper plate resting on his midriff.

The filings state, “Harold fell ill after consuming the brownie and was rushed to the emergency room the following day.”

His recuperation involved multiple hospital visits, which purportedly irritated the individuals accused of trying to kill him.

Police allege that the duo exchanged messages on 28 November, with Marsha reportedly stating: “I am irritated and can’t sleep peacefully.

“I need this to be over,” said the distraught mother and wife. “I hope it reaches its climax soon and ends lol,” to which Jones supposedly responded, acknowledging her agreement.

Two days subsequent to the conversation, Allen found himself in the emergency room again, though his symptoms were attributed to intestinal inflammation by the physicians.

Choosing a different deadly plant, the mother and daughter, as per authorities, opted for hemlock, procuring it through Etsy this time.

Despite multiple alleged attempts by using it in a bowl of chili, a glass of soda, and a margarita during December, all of which seemed ineffective, Jones reportedly decided to procure ethylene glycol on the 13th of December, aiming to mix it into a root beer.

A week later, Allen passed away.

Almost a year following this incident, Marsha Allen’s home in Freetown, which is situated approximately 40 miles from Bloomington, was targeted in a burglary. The local police apprehended Steven Andrew White, 29, and Nathaniel Kane Napier, 28, linking them to the crime.

Nevertheless, the authorities suggested that White and Napier did not act independently. According to statements made by Jackson County Sheriff Rick Meyer last year, the burglary was executed under the command and with the help of Marsha’s daughter, Ashley Jones.

Marsha Allen reported to the authorities her suspicions about her daughter being involved from the beginning, as the culprits had access to the gun safe’s combination. She believed her daughter, Jones, was the only other individual who knew the combination.

White disclosed to an investigator that not only did Jones instigate the burglary involving him and Napier, but he also claimed that she had accused her mother of having fatally poisoned Allen previously.

Allen refuted these claims and handed over her phone to the police, which led to the discovery of crucial evidence that supported the alleged plan to murder Allen.

Text messages exchanged between the duo in December 2022 were found on her phone, which officials uncovered.

According to the sheriff’s office, Jones has admitted to ordering the ethylene glycol that would be used to kill her stepfather but insisted it was her mother who committed the act by lacing his drink with it.

Allen’s wife died of suspected suicide the same day that a search warrant for her home was put into effect in October 2023, following the arrest of Jones for allegedly instigating the burglary of her mother’s house.

Jones now faces an abundance of charges, namely two counts of murder, one count of conspiracy to commit murder, one count of consumer product tampering, and two counts of attempted murder.

A trial for Jones is scheduled to begin on 7 January 2025.
