City Releases Q&A on Whiskey Row Hotel Ahead of Council Review

The City of Prescott has recently shared a list of frequently asked questions about the proposed Plaza Hotel on Whiskey Row, which is set for a review by the City Council on Tuesday, July 8. The Q&A was posted on the city’s Facebook page on July 1.

The council meeting will be held at 3 p.m. at Prescott City Hall, located at 201 N. Montezuma Street, in the first-floor council chambers. Developer Jim Griset initially proposed the hotel project in August 2023, but the Prescott Preservation Commission denied his request to demolish the existing buildings at 136, 138, and 140 S. Montezuma Street, which would make way for a new four-story boutique hotel.

Revealed: The World’s Best Whiskey According to the International Whiskey Competition

The 2025 International Whiskey Competition recently awarded the title of the world’s best whiskey to Kavalan Solist Fino Sherry Single Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky, crafted in Taiwan. This whiskey outperformed all other competitors globally, achieving an impressive score of 97.04.

Judges assessed various whiskey entries, including bourbons and Scotches, in a rigorous double-blind taste test, where they knew neither the names nor the origins of the submissions. Max Solano, the competition director, highlighted that each whiskey is evaluated solely on its own merits.

The International Whiskey Competition stands apart by limiting its awards to gold, silver, and bronze medals in each category. This approach encourages distillers to submit only their finest products, ensuring high-quality results across the board. Solano noted a notable trend in submissions this year, with increased emphasis on experimental distilling, innovative barrel treatments, and contributions from previously underrepresented regions.

The intricate flavor profile of Kavalan’s award-winning whiskey impressed the judges. Adam Edmondson, the Master of Whiskey for the competition, described the whiskey’s nose as bursting with notes of mango, apricot, and grilled pineapple, complemented by layers of almonds, dried figs, and oak spice. The palate is characterized by rich plum, brandied cherries, and dark chocolate, leading to a finish marked by coffee, sandalwood, and dried citrus.

In addition to winning Whiskey of the Year, Kavalan Distillery was recognized as "Distillery of the Year," and its head of R&D, Zerose Yang, was named "Master Distiller of the Year." The distillery had multiple whiskeys ranking in the top tier of rated entries, including the Solist Manzanilla Sherry and Solist Palo Cortado, which scored 95.78 and 95.68, respectively. Solano emphasized that Kavalan’s achievements illustrate the potential of modern Taiwanese whiskey, merging traditional techniques with innovative approaches.

David Ortiz Shares Insights on Red Sox’s Rafael Devers Trade and Unveils His Rum Release

David Ortiz has shared his reactions regarding the Boston Red Sox’s recent trade of All-Star Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. Ortiz noted that he was not surprised by the decision, stating that sometimes players and teams must part ways if they cannot agree on specific conditions. Devers had been asked to play multiple positions, which he was reluctant to do, preferring to stay at third base. After Boston signed All-Star Alex Bregman, Devers was moved to designated hitter.

The trade sent Devers, who has a hefty 10-year, $313.5 million contract extension, to San Francisco in exchange for young players like Kyle Harrison and Jordan Hicks. Ortiz expressed well-wishes to Devers and pointed out that the trade provided the Red Sox with more financial flexibility to find someone aligned with the organization’s direction.

Since the trade on June 15, the Red Sox have struggled, posting a 5-8 record and falling 6.5 games behind the New York Yankees. Devers, on the other hand, has also faced challenges with his new team, batting just .204 since the trade compared to his .272 with the Red Sox.

Ortiz reflected on the mutual unhappiness between Devers and the Red Sox, emphasizing the necessity of moving forward for both parties. He expressed a desire to support Devers, being from the same Dominican Republic background, but noted that attempts to connect had been unsuccessful.

Beyond his baseball career, Ortiz is pivoting toward entrepreneurship with the launch of his rum brand, "Ozama Rum." Named after the Ozama River in Santo Domingo, the brand celebrates his heritage. Ortiz elaborated that the idea for the rum began about a year and a half ago, stemming from a passion for the natural ingredients and the sugarcane for which the Dominican Republic is renowned.

In launching Ozama Rum, Ortiz aims not only to introduce a premium product but also to create jobs back home. The reception has been promising, with testimonials about its quality and the lack of hangovers after consumption, resonating positively with consumers.

Discussing his vision for Ozama Rum, Ortiz highlighted the significance of quality and creativity in the product, aiming to connect with audiences through enjoyable experiences reminiscent of family gatherings from his childhood. His approach stresses fun and unity, reinforcing the communal aspects of enjoying rum—a beverage deeply tied to his upbringing and cultural traditions.

Jo Malone CBE Unveils Jo Vodka: A Unique Blend of Memory and Flavor

Jo Malone CBE has ventured into the world of spirits with the launch of her new brand, Jo Vodka. Known for her iconic fragrance creations, Malone is now blending her expertise in scent with the world of taste, aiming to create a uniquely expressive vodka experience.

Malone describes her inspiration as a desire to explore the intersection of smell and taste. "I’ve always wondered if I could take my sense of smell and push it further into the world of taste, because to me, the two are deeply intertwined," she shares. Jo Vodka will debut with three distinct expressions: 101 – The Purist, 102 – The Bohemian, and 103 – The Artist. Each vodka is crafted with natural botanicals and oils in collaboration with master distiller Joanne Moore, designed to evoke sensory awakening.

The concept for Jo Vodka emerged during a breakfast with friends who encouraged Malone to consider the similarities between making fragrances and spirits. They expressed that vodka, with its purity and versatility, would be an ideal platform for her creativity.

Emotion and personal expression are foundational to Malone’s work, which influenced the creation of each vodka. The memory behind 103 – The Artist, for example, pays tribute to her father and her formative years on King’s Road. Malone explains, "Each day, walking to the florist where I worked in Sloane Square, I was exposed to an eclectic mix of people, experiences, and senses. That daily rhythm left a lasting impression."

Malone’s approach also incorporates her synaesthesia, which allows her to experience scents and tastes as colors and textures. This unique perspective informs how she envisions each vodka: 101 as a soft leather, 102 as silk, and 103 as tweed.

Recognizing that vodka is typically considered a neutral spirit, Malone emphasizes the importance of the 101 expression. She describes it as "the key to unlocking the whole collection," designed to embody classic vodka purity with a delicate balance of sweetness and sharp clarity.

To support the launch, Jo Vodka will be available in 100 World Duty-Free stores globally this summer, partnered with retailer Avolta, promoting a transformative travel experience. This launch aligns well with the growing premium vodka market, anticipated to reach around $81 billion by 2033, indicating a rising demand for unique and high-end flavor experiences.

As Malone reflects on her journey, she remains committed to exploring her sensory world, hinting at the potential for future projects beyond vodka, such as Jo Wine or Jo Whisky. "I am a storyteller and want to carry on this journey," she states, underlining her passion for creativity and innovation.

BROOK PARK, Ohio –

Disorderly Conduct on Smith Road

On June 15, at around 8 p.m., a Brook Park man was taken into custody for disorderly conduct after he caused a scene at a gas station on Smith Road. Police were called when he refused to leave the Shell station. They found him stumbling outside a nearby Circle K, carrying an unopened can of beer.

Despite his level of intoxication, the man denied causing any disturbance. Officers informed him that they would escort him to a MetroHealth System hospital due to his condition, which prompted him to lose his temper and throw his wallet on a police car. While attempting to walk away, he was handcuffed, and officers discovered a small bottle of vodka in his pocket. When taken to MetroHealth, he exhibited hostile behavior towards the medical staff.

Fleeing from Police in a Jeep

On June 12, a driver in a Jeep Grand Cherokee led police on a chase around 8:30 p.m. The pursuit began when the driver made an illegal U-turn on Fry Road and ran a red light. Though police attempted to pull the vehicle over, the tinted license plate cover prevented them from identifying the vehicle.

The chase continued onto I-71 northbound, where the Jeep reached speeds of 97 mph. However, police eventually terminated the pursuit for safety reasons near the I-71 and I-480 interchange.

Shoplifting Incident

At approximately 2:45 p.m. on June 14, a theft involving 15 cases of Red Bull occurred at the Giant Eagle on Snow Road. Witnesses reported seeing a man fleeing the scene with a shopping cart filled with the energy drinks. He was later identified as a 29-year-old Columbia Station resident, with police tracing his vehicle’s license plate back to his home. The suspect was already wanted for a parole violation pertaining to a previous burglary charge.

Counterfeiting Attempt

At Quick State Liquor on Smith Road, an unidentified man attempted to purchase a bottle of Woodford Reserve using a counterfeit $100 bill that bore the phrase "For motion picture purposes." The transaction was interrupted when the store employee realized the bill was fake and reclaimed the bottle and change before the man could leave.

Theft of Catalytic Converters

On June 12, two buses parked outside Mr. Formal Transportation on Engle Road were reported missing their catalytic converters. The theft is believed to have occurred either late on June 11 or early on June 12. An early morning patrol on June 18 revealed one bus with flashing hazard lights and led police to confirm that its catalytic converter had also been stolen.

Drug-Related Arrest

A 36-year-old woman from Cleveland was cited for possession of narcotic equipment around 9 p.m. on June 16. Police stopped a Ford Taurus after it stalled at a green light. The backseat passenger, who had visible signs of recent drug use, was found in possession of hypodermic syringes. She was a known fugitive wanted for multiple offenses, including drug possession and larceny. The driver received a citation for a traffic violation.
