They became enamored with the delectable pies served by renowned Bay Area-founded chains such as Straw Hat and Round Table. It wasn’t long before pizza became a staple in their lives, igniting their passion for this Italian delicacy.
Fast forward to the present day, their legacy lives on through their devoted sons. Baldeep, the son of Bali, currently resides in Oakland, while Gurpreet, son of Bill, calls Fairfield his home. A tragic incident unfolded in Daylesford, Victoria, as a car careened into a beer garden, resulting in the loss of five lives and leaving two families shattered.
Yesterday afternoon, a devastating incident occurred at the Royal Daylesford hotel in Victoria, Australia. A white BMW SUV crashed into the pub’s beer garden, resulting in the tragic loss of five lives, including two children. The victims were members of two separate family groups who were visiting the area.
The incident took place just after 6pm on Sunday when the SUV mounted the kerb and collided with patrons on the front lawn of the hotel. Four victims, two men in their 30s, a woman in her 40s, and a boy, were pronounced dead at the scene. Another female child, reported to be a teenager, was airlifted to the Alfred hospital in Melbourne but sadly passed away later that evening.
According to Victoria’s chief police commissioner, Shane Patton, the families involved were known to each other. He stated, “There were, in essence, two… different family groups that were significantly involved and impacted by this.” The victims have yet to be formally identified.
In addition to the fatalities, five people sustained injuries and were taken to various hospitals for treatment. Among the injured is a six-year-old boy who is in a stable condition at the Royal Children’s Hospital. A 35-year-old woman is in a serious condition in the intensive care unit at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, while a 43-year-old woman and a 38-year-old man, both flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, are understood to be in stable conditions. An 11-month-old baby was also airlifted to Ballarat Base Hospital and is currently in a stable condition.
The driver of the BMW, a 66-year-old man from Mount Macedon, was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Police conducted a breath test and confirmed that no alcohol was detected in his system. However, the driver’s blood tests will undergo further analysis. Authorities from the major collision investigation unit will interview the driver later today to determine the cause of the fatal crash.
While it is too early to determine if speed played a role in the incident, Commissioner Patton expressed his utmost gratitude to the first responders who handled the scene. He acknowledged the immense emotional toll they will carry with them, stating, “It may haunt them forever… It’s one of the most confronting scenes, I’ve been told, that experienced officers have been to.”
Emergency services, including ambulance paramedics, were praised for their swift response and the excellent care they provided despite the chaotic nature of the situation. Trevor Weston, the regional director of Victoria Ambulance, commended the efforts of the public in assisting the injured before medical professionals arrived. He emphasized that the injuries sustained were quite traumatic for the patients involved.
The tight-knit community of Daylesford, where the incident occurred, was deeply affected by the tragic event. Brian Hood, the mayor of Hepburn shire, expressed his condolences, acknowledging the shockwaves that will reverberate through the community for some time. The area was crowded due to the unofficial Melbourne Cup long weekend, with many residents and visitors enjoying the warm evening.
Political figures also expressed their condolences and gratitude for the response of emergency services. Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan extended her thoughts to the injured and the families of those who lost their lives in the “horrific” crash. Hepburn member Catherine King urged the community to follow the guidance of emergency services during the ongoing investigation.
This heartbreaking incident reminds us of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing each moment. Our thoughts are with the victims’ families and loved ones during this difficult time.

Cornell study reveals that non-alcoholic beer could pose a greater risk of E.coli and salmonella.
Title: Beer Brewing Safety: Protecting Your Pint from Bacterial Intruders
Introduction:
Greetings, beer enthusiasts! We appreciate your interest in the world of brewing. Today, we bring you insights from an intriguing research study conducted by Cornell University. While the story and logic remain the same, we’ve decided to present this information in a different format. So, grab your favorite pint (safely brewed, of course) and let’s delve into the fascinating world of low- and non-alcoholic beer.
The Study:
Let’s get straight to the heart of the matter. Cornell University’s research team unraveled an interesting tale of bacteria lurking within the confines of low- and non-alcoholic beer. In their study published in the Journal of Food Protection, they shed light on the hidden dangers that lie within improperly brewed or stored beers.
The Dark Side of Alcohol Concentration:
You might be surprised to learn that traditional hurdles, such as alcohol concentration, play a vital role in preventing bacterial growth. Nontraditional beers, with their relatively low ethanol concentration, become breeding grounds for gnarly bacteria. The Cornell study emphasizes the impact of various factors like high pH, high sugar concentration, low carbon dioxide, and low hop bittering compounds in rendering these beverages more susceptible to spoilage microorganisms and foodborne pathogens.
A Long Journey for the Germs:
The researchers added a touch of drama to their study by inoculating canned beer samples from Genesee Brewing Company with a potent cocktail of E. coli, Salmonella enterica, and Listeria monocytogenes. Extending the suspense, they stored these samples at two temperatures (4 and 14 degrees Celsius) for a staggering 63 days. To the surprise of many, both E. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella thrived and survived in low- and non-alcoholic beers throughout this period.
Listeria, on the other hand, remained undetectable at all pH levels. This important finding highlights the dynamics of different pathogens and their ability to adapt to varying environments.
The Potential Risks:
Major strains of E. coli can cause severe illness in humans, as confirmed by Johns Hopkins Medicine. Furthermore, the study warns of the potential growth and toxin production of Clostridium botulinum in craft beverages with a pH higher than 4.60. Awareness of these risks is crucial for both brewers and consumers.
The Rising Trend:
Non-alcoholic beer has witnessed a significant surge in popularity in recent years. According to data from NielsenIQ, US sales of non-alcoholic beer rose by 32% in the 52 weeks through Sept. 9. This growth trend has averaged at an impressive 31% over four years, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.
Protecting Your Pint:
Considering the potential risks associated with low- and non-alcoholic beers, the Cornell researchers emphasize the need for stringent food safety plans in the brewing industry. Their recommendations include pasteurization, sterile filtration, and the addition of preservatives to reduce microbial risks. Additionally, regular sanitization of kegs, draught system tubing, and faucets, as well as following good handling and cleaning practices during the manufacturing process, are crucial precautions to safeguard the quality and safety of these beverages.
Conclusion:
As we raise our glasses to the fascinating world of brewing, let’s not forget the importance of ensuring safe drinking experiences. The Cornell study serves as a reminder that low- and non-alcoholic beers may present unique challenges in terms of bacterial growth and pathogen propagation. By prioritizing food safety plans and implementing appropriate practices, both brewers and consumers can enjoy their favorite brews without compromising their well-being. Cheers to safe, delicious, and bacteria-free beer!
According to a study conducted by Cornell University, non-alcoholic beer may increase the likelihood of being exposed to E.coli and salmonella.
Title: “Bacteria Brewing: The Hidden Dangers Lurking in Low-Alcohol Beers”
Dear beer enthusiasts,
Thank you for reaching out to us! We appreciate your interest and on that note, we have an interesting topic to discuss today. We’ve received your submission, and we’d like to shed light on a somewhat alarming discovery—low- and non-alcoholic beers can potentially become havens for harmful bacteria under certain circumstances.
While the incidence of food poisoning cases caused by beer is generally rare, new findings from Cornell University have revealed that improperly brewed or stored low- and non-alcoholic beers can create an environment conducive to the growth of nasty bacteria. In a study published in the Journal of Food Protection, the authors explained that nontraditional beers lack one crucial barrier to bacterial growth: ethanol concentration. Additionally, the combination of high pH, high sugar content, low carbon dioxide, and low hop bittering compounds contribute to these beverages’ vulnerability to spoilage microorganisms and foodborne pathogens.
To illustrate this, the Cornell study conducted an experiment. Canned beer samples from Genesee Brewing Company in Rochester, NY, were inoculated with cocktails consisting of five strains of E. coli, salmonella enterica, and listeria monocytigenes. These samples were then stored at two different temperatures (4 and 14 degrees Celsius) for a duration of 63 days. Shockingly, the researchers found that E. coli O157:H7 and salmonella thrived and survived in both low- and non-alcoholic beers for over two months, regardless of storage temperature. It is worth noting that E. coli O157:H7 is the most common strain responsible for human illness.
Listeria, on the other hand, remained undetectable at all pH levels throughout the study. Nevertheless, the researchers concluded that beers with high pH (>4.60), low to no alcohol content, and low carbon dioxide levels are particularly susceptible to spoilage and pathogen growth. In fact, any craft beverage with a pH exceeding 4.60 runs the risk of Clostridium botulinum growth, potentially leading to toxin production.
These findings may surprise many, especially considering the growing popularity of non-alcoholic beers in the United States. In the 52 weeks leading up to September 9th, sales of non-alcoholic beer increased by a staggering 32% compared to the previous year. This trend has continued to grow steadily, averaging 31% growth over the past four years, according to data from NielsenIQ as reported by the Wall Street Journal.
In light of these concerning results, the researchers emphasize the importance for beverage manufacturers, specifically low- and non-alcoholic beer producers, to prioritize food safety measures in their production processes. They recommend implementing pasteurization, utilizing sterile filtration techniques, and incorporating preservatives to minimize microbial risks. Additionally, it is crucial for breweries to regularly sanitize kegs, draught system tubing, and faucets, while adhering to good handling and cleaning practices throughout the manufacturing process.
So, for all beer aficionados out there, keep in mind that not all beers are created equal when it comes to bacterial growth. While the chances of encountering issues with low- and non-alcoholic beers are still relatively low, these findings highlight the importance of maintaining stringent food safety standards within the brewing industry. By doing so, we can continue to enjoy our favorite beverages with peace of mind.
Cheers to safe and delicious beer!

After an argument, a beer worker at Tsingtao urinated into a tank.
An Unfortunate Incident at a Chinese Beer Factory Gives Rise to Serious Concerns###
In a recent turn of events, a Chinese worker’s controversial actions at a Tsingtao beer factory have sparked widespread outrage and raised questions about the brewery’s quality control measures. Last month, the worker, who was filmed urinating into a tank containing ingredients for Tsingtao beer, became the center of attention as the video went viral on social media platforms, accumulating millions of views.
Following the incident, the worker was promptly detained, as mentioned in an official report released by the city of Pingdu, where the brewery is situated. According to authorities, the worker, identified by the surname Cui, found himself embroiled in an argument with a truck driver regarding the relocation of a vehicle. In an act of frustration and retaliation, Cui decided to climb into an emptied container and urinate into it, unaware that his actions were being recorded by the driver. The video was subsequently uploaded on Douyin, China’s equivalent of TikTok.
In response to this appalling incident, Tsingtao issued a statement via the popular Chinese microblogging site Weibo, explaining that administrative detention had been imposed on Cui for the damage caused. Administrative detention, a penalty levied by the police without the involvement of the judiciary, usually entails a detainment period ranging from five to 15 days, accompanied by a warning and sometimes a fine.
It is worth noting that the worker involved was not a direct employee of Tsingtao but instead worked for a company that provided outsourcing services to the brewery. Tsingtao, seeking to distance itself from this unfortunate incident, emphasized the implementation of various measures to strengthen quality control protocols and to enhance the monitoring of employee behavior. The brewery also promised to address any “loopholes in the management of raw material transportation” to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
Tsingtao was keen to reassure the public that the malt batches, which were implicated in the incident, were securely sealed and would not be used in production. This commitment aligns with the brewery’s determination to prioritize consumer safety and maintain the high standards for which they are renowned.
While this deeply regrettable event has caused public uproar and damage to Tsingtao’s reputation, it underscores the importance of stringent quality control measures within the beverage industry. It serves as a wake-up call for all brewers to reevaluate their protocols and strengthen their monitoring and training practices to prevent any potential issues.
In conclusion, Tsingtao’s swift response to this incident demonstrates their commitment to maintaining the trust and satisfaction of their consumers. The brewery’s dedication to reinforcing quality control measures and addressing the behavior of outsourcing partners is commendable, and it should serve as a lesson to other companies within the industry. By consistently improving and rectifying any deficiencies, Tsingtao can regain the public’s confidence and continue to thrive as one of China’s most beloved beer brands.
