If it seems like the sudden surge in popularity of rye whiskey is just a passing fad, think again. First distilled in 1750, several decades before the invention of bourbon, it was the dominant spirit in the fledgling United States. George Washington himself owned a rye distillery that produced up to 11,000 gallons a year, a version of which is still made at Mount Vernon today. Primarily produced in Pennsylvania and Maryland by immigrants from Ireland and Scotland, it had a stranglehold on the market throughout the early nineteenth century.
A historically spicier whiskey than its close cousin, bourbon, it slowly began to decline in popularity, and the arrival of Prohibition almost killed it. As a grain and whiskey, rye is more expensive and challenging to work with than the corn used in bourbon. As the illegal liquor market spread across the country in the 1920s, bootleggers turned their backs on rye and instead dove into corn-based bourbon and moonshine.
When Prohibition was overturned in 1933, the once-proud and dominant rye whiskey market didn’t return. Instead, cheap Canadian whiskeys calling themselves ryes appeared, and the style sank to bottom-shelf status akin to rock gut. It was a tragic end to a once-beloved whiskey style.
Luckily, the booming cocktail and craft distilling scene of the new millennium has led to a revival of this iconic whiskey. You can easily find rye-based cocktails at most bars, and store shelves are filling up with new and exciting bottles of rye whiskey. While that’s nothing but good news for drinkers, it does raise the question of what bottles are the best to search out.
Every year since 2000, the San Francisco World Spirits Competition has brought together the finest bottles of booze from around the globe in one of the most significant events of its kind. Designed to identify the finest spirits on the planet, it has become one of the premier events on the spirits’ calendar. It’s often called the “Oscars of the Spirits World.” Each bottle is blind taste tested by an esteemed panel of judges. The finest are awarded double gold medals, and out of that pool, a select group of finalists are singled out for Best in Class Awards.

Del Dotto Winery: A Fusion of Fine Wine, Venetian Art, and Magnificent Opera Music
Venetian Style Architecture Featured at Del Dotto Estate Winery & Caves in Napa Valley, CA
If you drive down Highway 29 in Napa Valley it is hard to miss the imposing stone and iron gates of Del Dotto Estate Winery, with the massive pottery amphorae flanking each side. But if you decide to turn in, there is an even more breathtaking structure at the end of the driveway – a Venetian-style palace that has been built into the hillside, complete with wine caves.
“When we researched our family history and discovered that it is Venetian and dates back to 1150, we decided to design a winery that honors our heritage,” stated Dave Del Dotto, co-owner and founder, during my recent visit to the estate.
Dave, a retired real estate and infomercial tycoon, and his wife, Yolanda, invited stone masons from Italy to construct the 16,000 square foot palace, complete with a marble exterior, fountains, statues, olive trees, and vineyards. Inside visitors are awestruck by the domed ceiling with massive chandeliers made with Murano glass, soaring arches, marble pillars, stone mosaics, and exquisite Venetian art. And echoing through the sound system is thrilling opera music.
“My Dad loves opera music, as you may guess,” said Desirée Del Dotto, Chief Operations Officer and Marketing Director for the winery, as well as the three other wineries the family owns (Piazza Del Dotto Winery & Caves, Villa del Lago, and the original Del Dotto Historic Winery on Silverado Trail).
After several years of construction, Del Dotto Estate Winery & Caves opened its doors in 2007, and quickly became a showcase winery in Napa Valley, as well as a favorite place for the Kardashians to visit.
“We have welcomed and filmed with the Kardashians here on three different occasions, and it was an honor that Kylie Jenner selected us as her first winery to visit when she turned 21,” reported Desirée.
Italian Art, Mosaics, & Murano Chandeliers Featured at Del Dotto Estate Winery
Perhaps part of the reason that celebrities and thousands of other visitors are attracted to Del Dotto Estate Winery is the unique wine tasting experience they offer.
“We believe in allowing guests to taste not only the different grape varietals and appellations of Napa Valley, but also to experience the impact of different types of oak aging on wine,” explained Desirée as she and Dave escorted me into the ‘sacred caves.’
Oak wine barrels lined both sides of the very long cave, with intricately tiled floors and walls, and more massive chandeliers. Desirée used a wine thief to deftly extract red wine from a barrel, and poured it gracefully into our waiting wine glasses.
“This is cabernet sauvignon from Napa Valley’s St. Helena AVA and is aged in French oak,” she explained. “Next we will try the same wine in American oak.” The difference is quite astounding, with the French oak providing delicate notes of honey and allspice, while the American oak enhanced the wine with broader swaths of crème brule, mocha and vanilla.
“We ask visitors which they prefer, and encourage them to ask questions, rather than lecturing to them about the wine,” explained Dave.
Desirée said that many visitors ask her what her favorite wine is and she responds that her opinion doesn’t matter. “Wine is like art, and you like what you like. It doesn’t matter what I or someone else like.”
Not to be outdone, Dave chimed in. “Wine is like liquid art. It is like going to the Louvre, and if you were able to take down a painting or a statue and drink it – that would be the art.”
Altogether the Del Dotto’s make approximately 30 different variations and vintages of Napa Valley cabernet sauvignon in very small lots, with visitors allowed to taste directly from 5 to 8 barrels, as well as assorted bottled wine. Guests then select the barrels they prefer and the Del Dotto’s will bottle and ship the wine to them.
“Our biggest challenge is that we sell out of our wines very quickly with this tasting method,” admitted Desirée.

Over the years the Del Dotto’s have managed to receive many high-scores from wine critics, especially Robert Parker, who awarded them three 100-point scores. One of these was for their 2012 vintage of ‘The Beast,’ which is a special red blend made from select vineyard rows.
“We named it ‘The Beast’ because the first time a good friend tasted it, he called it a ‘beast of a wine,’’ explained Dave.
The wine, sold in a special ‘caged box,’ is produced in very limited quantities and typically sells out to wine club members almost immediately at the current price of $295 per bottle. It is a robust red blend with rich, concentrated flavors of cassis, black plum, graphite, cocoa, and espresso beans, with a long complex finish.
Dave mentioned that ‘The Beast‘ is frequently resold on the secondary market in Asia to collectors, who have paid up to $1000 per bottle for it, “and have sent me videos of how they have taste-offs comparing it to Chateau LaTour.”
‘Sacred Caves’ at Del Dotto Estate Winery in Napa Valley
But Del Dotto Estate Winery doesn’t only focus on cabernet sauvignon, as they own a hilltop vineyard in the Sonoma Coast where they produce high-end pinot noir and chardonnay. They also make sauvignon blanc, syrah, cabernet franc, merlot, sangiovese, and several delicious sparkling wines. Altogether they own 108 vineyard acres, and produce around 20,000 cases of wine per year, which they primarily sell directly to consumers.
Visitors to the estate can make an advance reservation for a Bar Tasting for $75 per person or Cave Experience and Barrel Tasting for $120 per person. A good plan is to schedule a morning tasting at Del Dotto Estate Winery and then drive a few minutes down Highway 29 to visit their second winery, Piazza Del Dotto Winery & Caves. Here you can enjoy an oven-baked pizza on the terrace overlooking the organic garden. This winery features an even larger cave network dug back into the hillside, and an Italian-inspired barn with turkeys, chickens, and peacocks.

If it seems like the sudden surge in popularity of rye whiskey is just a passing fad, think again. First distilled in 1750, several decades before the invention of bourbon, it was the dominant spirit in the fledgling United States. George Washington himself owned a rye distillery that produced up to 11,000 gallons a year, a version of which is still made at Mount Vernon today. Primarily produced in Pennsylvania and Maryland by immigrants from Ireland and Scotland, it had a stranglehold on the market throughout the early nineteenth century.
A historically spicier whiskey than its close cousin, bourbon, it slowly began to decline in popularity, and the arrival of Prohibition almost killed it. As a grain and whiskey, rye is more expensive and challenging to work with than the corn used in bourbon. As the illegal liquor market spread across the country in the 1920s, bootleggers turned their backs on rye and instead dove into corn-based bourbon and moonshine.
When Prohibition was overturned in 1933, the once-proud and dominant rye whiskey market didn’t return. Instead, cheap Canadian whiskeys calling themselves ryes appeared, and the style sank to bottom-shelf status akin to rock gut. It was a tragic end to a once-beloved whiskey style.
Luckily, the booming cocktail and craft distilling scene of the new millennium has led to a revival of this iconic whiskey. You can easily find rye-based cocktails at most bars, and store shelves are filling up with new and exciting bottles of rye whiskey. While that’s nothing but good news for drinkers, it does raise the question of what bottles are the best to search out.
Every year since 2000, the San Francisco World Spirits Competition has brought together the finest bottles of booze from around the globe in one of the most significant events of its kind. Designed to identify the finest spirits on the planet, it has become one of the premier events on the spirits’ calendar. It’s often called the “Oscars of the Spirits World.” Each bottle is blind taste tested by an esteemed panel of judges. The finest are awarded double gold medals, and out of that pool, a select group of finalists are singled out for Best in Class Awards.
Here are the five bottles vying for the Best in Class Rye Whisky Award presented in no order. The champions will be revealed at their Top Shelf Awards Gala in San Francisco on October 5-6.
River Roots Barrel Company-Rye Whiskey Single Barrel
Situated in Cleveland, Ohio, the River Roots Barrel Company team is focused on producing high-quality American whiskeys that appeal to modern drinkers yet pay homage to time-honored techniques. Their Straight Rye Whiskey, a new offering, wowed the judges with flavors of cinnamon, clove, vanilla, and caramel.
Tumblin’ Dice-Curated Small Batch Straight Rye Whiskey
It seems that every single year, the whiskeys from Tumblin’ Dice appear at the top of whiskey competitions across the globe. That is a testament to their creator, industry legend Dave Schmier. Known for his innovative and incredible blends of whiskey, he has been turning heads for decades. According to the judges, his Curated Small Batch Straight Rye Whiskey exhibited notes of dried fruit, spice, caramel, and vanilla.
Dark Arts Whiskey House-Straight Rye Whiskey Finished with Toasted Amburana Oak Staves
Dark Arts Whiskey House in Lexington, Kentucky, uses underutilized maturation and blending techniques to create liquid gold. It’s only fitting that their Straight Rye Whiskey would grab the judge’s attention. By adding toasted Ambrurana Oak staves to whiskey that has been aged at least six years, they have created a spirit that the judges called out due to its complex and aromatic nature.
Penelope Toasted Straight Rye Whiskey
Launched in 2018, Penelope Bourbon is a newcomer with a great backstory. Created to celebrate by Mike Paladini and Daniel Polise to celebrate the impending birth of Paladini’s first child, Penelope, it has quickly racked up a legion of devoted fans. Focused on using innovative approaches that focus on unique focuses and high-quality ingredients, their bottles are a prime example of the new breed of whiskey brands changing the game. Their Toasted Straight Rye Whiskey was noted as sweet and inviting, with notes of honey, vanilla, and a hint of spice.

Hailing from tiny Daufuskie Island just off the coast of South Carolina, Tabby Road only just entered the whiskey game. If their Single Barrel Rye is any indication, they have a long and fruitful road ahead. It’s a high-proof rye whiskey that delivers an intense experience with each sip. It is designed to showcase the spicy and bold flavors rye is known for. The judges noted its spice, vanilla, oak, dark chocolate, caramel, and vanilla flavors.

New Local Brand Joins the Popular Cocktails-by-the-Can Trend
Drop Needle Drinks is a new entry into the ready-to-drink cocktail market, with three sparkling wine and fruit-juice-based products now available at many local restaurants and liquor stores.
During the pandemic Nallely Suarez Gass, an Oak Park resident, and three colleagues at a national beer company started thinking about shifting trends in alcohol consumption and began to dream about making their own products.
“People are shifting to wanting to have a cocktail in their hand and we saw beer sales going down. We saw even some of the seltzers going down, which is why we saw an opportunity to make something that was wine based,” Gass said.
Ready-to-drink cocktails currently make up 12% of the U.S. alcoholic beverage market, according to several groups that study the industry. That percentage is expected to grow in the coming years. While this sector of the market has historically appealed to women, according to Gass men are starting to pick up pre-made cocktails as well.
Drop Needle Drinks come in three flavors, all made with real fruit juice: The Modern Mimosa is a blend of orange, tangerine, and clementine juices. The Berry Rosé Sparkler features blackberry and raspberry juices. The California 75 is a riff on a French 75, this time with lemon juice and notes of juniper and elderflower. All are made with sparkling wine from a family vineyard in Paso Robles, California. Each one is less than 9 grams of carbs and is gluten-free.
The first step for the company was to secure distribution in the Chicago area.
“Right now, we are door-to-door selling, knocking on every bar door, every restaurant door, every liquor store, every convenience store. Trying to build the brand so that then we can pursue the bigger stores,” Gass said.
Local distributor Burke Beverage was the first to deliver the drinks to market. Robert’s Westside was its first retail account. Now cans can be found at Sugar Beet, where a four-pack sells for $16.99, Carnival Grocery, La Tequileria, Taco Mucho, The Beer Shop, plus almost 100 other locations and counting.
“I felt really loved, because the local places have been really, really supportive,” Gass said. “Our goal is to cover the Chicagoland area, then we’ll branch out to other markets.”
Gass grew up in the city of Chicago and later moved to Texas to work for PepsiCo. When she moved back to the area, she knew that she wanted to settle in Oak Park.
“I just love how it feels. We rented for a little bit while we found our dream home. And it’s been 13 years now.”
Feeling the groove of a place, time or event is exactly what the name Drop Needle means.
“It’s about that moment when the party reaches a different level. When you’re having a good time and then, something happens. You’re with the right people. You have the right drink. And all of a sudden, you hear a song, or someone takes out a guitar and it’s like you feel this shift in what you’re experiencing.”
That’s a Drop Needle moment to Gass.

New Release Alert: Stellar Craft Distillery Unveils Whiskeys Finished in Beer and Wine Casks
Whiskey fans have been waiting for the American single malt category to finally get its own legal definition for about two years, and a coalition of distilleries just sent a letter to the TTB urging action on the matter. In the meantime, both legacy and craft distilleries continue to release this still under-the-radar style of American whiskey. One of the best is Seattle’s Westland Whiskey, which just announced the release of two new single malts finished in beer and wine casks.
These new entries in the Cask Exploration Series were conceived of as a tribute to Westland’s home in the Pacific Northwest, so the distillery team worked with local breweries and wineries—and there indeed many in the region—to source used casks. “We’re delving into the vast possibilities of cask finishing with these new releases,” said master blender Shane Armstrong in a statement. “The Pacific Northwest is known for its exceptional beer, wine, and whiskey. These expressions bring those delicacies together.”

The first expression in the pair is the Beer Cask Finish American Single Malt Whiskey (this is not the first time Westland has used this type of finish, as the distillery worked with various local breweries for its Cask Exchange series). This whiskey was made from a mashbill of specific varietals of malted barley, some of which is commonly used to make beer, including Washington Select Pale Malt, Munich Malt, Extra Special Malt, Brown Malt, Pale Chocolate Malt, Pilsen Malt, and Maris Otter Malt. It was aged for a minimum of eight years—originally in new American oak and ex-bourbon and rye whiskey barrels, and then in casks that were previously used to age Scotch ale, stout, brown ale, doppelbock, saison, and stock ale. According to the official tasting notes, the result is a bright whiskey with a malt-forward flavor that has notes of vanilla pastry cream, caramel sauce, and lavender green tea on the palate.
The second of the pair is the Wine Cask Finish American Single Malt Whiskey. The barley used for this mashbill consisted of Washington Select Ale Malt, Munich Malt, Extra Special Malt, Brown Malt, and Pale Chocolate Malt. This whiskey was also aged in new and used oak barrels, this time for a minimum of five years, and then finished in five different types of wine cask: Tempranillo, WA Red Blend, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Petit Verdot. Official tasting notes describe a fruity whiskey with notes of chocolate raspberry turnover, Earl Grey tea, and dried strawberry on the palate. Both of these whiskeys were bottled at 46 percent ABV.
The Cask Exploration Series is being released in limited numbers, with about 11,000 bottles of the Beer Finish and 14,600 of the Wine Finish. The initial launch will be at the distillery and from its website (SRP $75 for each expression), while a national rollout will begin in September with the potential of future batches on the way in the coming years. A woman tried to kill her ex-lover with a broken vodka bottle after being out to celebrate her 40th birthday.
Louise Soutar stabbed Craig Johnston at his flat in Kirkcaldy, Fife in the early hours of last August 2.
The blood-soaked victim had to escape out of his living room window to get away from crazed Soutar. Mr Johnston needed emergency surgery at hospital, but luckily survived.
Mum-of-three Soutar, now 41, today pleaded guilty to an attempted murder charge as she appeared in the dock at the High Court in Glasgow.
She will be sentenced next month. Prosecutor Lynsey Rodger told how Soutar and the victim had remained on “friendly terms” after their split.
Mr Johnston now had a new partner and regularly stayed at her flat. Soutar turned 40 on August 1 last year and had gone to see the pair before heading for a family meal.
She later went back to the flat where she had a drink with her ex and his girlfriend. All three then went in a taxi intending to go to Soutar’s home in the town.
During the journey, an argument began between Soutar and Mr.Johnston. This led to the driver ordering them out. The trio then returned to each of their homes.
Mr. Johnston and his partner were asleep when they were awoken around 5 am by Soutar shouting to get in. She believed she had left her phone there earlier.
Soutar was allowed in as Mr. Johnston walked into the kitchen. Miss Rodger said, “Soutar then picked up a vodka bottle by the neck and went into the kitchen.
She shouted: ‘See you f***ing Craig.’ Soutar then hit him on the head with the bottle. It broke and Soutar stabbed him repeatedly on the head, neck, and stomach.”
Mr. Johnston punched his attacker to get her away. Both the traumatised victim and his girlfriend fled out a window before police arrived.
Mr. Johnston was rushed to hospital where he required a blood transfusion. He had multiple cuts to his face, skull, ear, and neck as well as two wounds to his stomach.
The court was told he has been left scarred for life. Soutar, still of Kirkcaldy, had been on bail prior to the hearing.
Judge Lord Clark told her: “You will be remanded in custody.” Sentencing was deferred for reports until September 10 in Edinburgh.
