Sip, Sip, Hooray? Lady Gaga’s Red Wine Rituals and the Bad Romance Behind Them

The first encounter with mixing wine and soda often evokes vivid memories, like those from childhood, where a family matriarch might mix Chianti with cream soda. Though I initially disapproved of the taste, it opened the door to discussing the varying preferences that people, including celebrities, have for their beverages. Lady Gaga has recently faced some mixed reactions on social media for the way she enjoys her red wine, mixing it with Diet Coke and maraschino cherries.

This revelation came to light when USA Today shared a video of people trying and enjoying this unusual blend. The comments, however, were harsh, with critics mocking the drink. One user remarked, “They just make that s*** up to get y’all to drink nasty s***," while another cruelly dubbed it "Lady gag gag." Yet, TikTok users appear to have a more forgiving stance, with one describing the combination as "mayhem in a glass" but still palatable, even rating it a respectable seven out of ten.

It’s important to note that Lady Gaga isn’t setting a new trend with her preference. The combination of red wine and cola has historical roots in Spanish culture and is known as Kalimotxo, which dates back to the 1920s. The drink gained popularity in the 1970s as a way to mask the taste of spoiled wine during festivals, cleverly named after a festival organizer.

Beyond the Kalimotxo, there are other refreshing wine and soda concoctions, like tinto de verano, which blends red wine with lemon-lime soda for a summertime treat. These drinks are not only designed to be enjoyable in warm weather but also come in with lower alcohol content, making them perfect for casual gatherings. This lighter mix might be particularly appealing to health-conscious individuals like Lady Gaga.

For those wanting to explore unique drink recipes, there’s more culinary inspiration to discover.

American Whiskey Brand Crowned World’s Most Admired for Three Consecutive Years

In 2023, Michter’s, the Kentucky-based whiskey brand, made history by becoming the first American name to take the top spot on the Drinks International list of The World’s Most Admired Whiskies. This achievement highlighted a significant moment for American whiskey, traditionally dominated by Scotch and Japanese brands.

Fast forward to 2025, and Michter’s secured this accolade for the third consecutive year, further cementing its status. The selection process involved a panel of 100 independent global drinks buyers, journalists, bartenders, and whiskey experts from over 20 countries. They ranked brands based on the quality and consistency of whiskeys, price-to-quality ratio, and the strength of branding and marketing.

In the 2025 list, Michter’s was accompanied by Maker’s Mark as the only American brands in the top 10. Here’s the complete list of the top 10 whiskies:

  1. Michter’s
  2. The Yamazaki
  3. Hibiki
  4. Ardbeg
  5. Compass Box
  6. Maker’s Mark
  7. Bruichladdich
  8. The Macallan
  9. Hakushu
  10. Laphroaig

Michter’s roots can be traced back to the 18th century in Pennsylvania, originally known as Shenk’s Distillery before being rebranded in the 1950s. Although the original distillery ceased operations in 1989, Joe Magliocco revived the brand in the late 1990s by acquiring the trademark and establishing new production in Kentucky.

Initially sourcing whiskey from other distilleries, Michter’s began its own distillation in 2015 at a new facility in Shively, Kentucky. The brand’s offerings include a range of bourbons and ryes, along with limited editions like the Michter’s Legacy Series, which features exclusive releases such as Bomberger’s Bourbon and Shenk’s Homestead Sour Mash.

Michter’s also produces a line of age-stated whiskeys that are only offered when deemed exceptional, with releases of 10-year bourbons, coveted 20-year bourbons, and the limited Michter’s Celebration Sour Mash.

Matt Magliocco, Michter’s Executive Vice President, expressed gratitude for the recognition, stating, “It’s literally a dream to have Michter’s recognized as the World’s Most Admired Whiskey… it’s extremely humbling to be acknowledged by our peers across the industry.”

In addition to the Shively distillery, Michter’s operates the Fort Nelson Distillery in downtown Louisville and a 205-acre property in Springfield, Kentucky, which is developing estate-grown grain.

Whiskey Of The Week: A Closer Look at Heaven Hill Master Distillers Unity Bourbon

In the late 1990s, the bourbon industry faced significant struggles, compounded by falling popularity due to the rising prominence of vodka and tequila. The tipping point came on November 7, 1996, when a catastrophic storm hit Bardstown, Kentucky, leading to a devastating fire at the Heaven Hill distillery that destroyed their facility and several warehouses, taking out approximately 15% of their whiskey stocks and costing around $30 million.

Years later, Heaven Hill has returned to the forefront of the bourbon scene with the launch of their new state-of-the-art Heaven Hill Springs Distillery, which now produces 1,500 barrels daily, with potential to triple that output. This resurrection comes during another challenging phase for the bourbon industry, marked by economic uncertainties and changing consumer behaviors, especially among younger generations.

In commemoration of this new chapter, Heaven Hill introduced a special whiskey, the Master Distillers Unity. This limited-edition bottle honors the legacy of the distillery, showcasing what is believed to be the last surviving barrel from the old Bardstown distillery, laid down in 1991 by Parker Beam, a notable figure in Heaven Hill’s history.

The Master Distillers Unity blend consists of four unique bourbons, including a 14-year old from Beam, and an 8-year and 6-year old bourbon from his successors. Bottled at 107 proof, it features the hallmark Heaven Hill mashbill of 78% corn, 12% malted barley, and 10% rye.

A mere 4,000 bottles were produced, blending history and expertise into a complex flavor profile that includes rich butterscotch notes complemented by walnuts and milk chocolate, with a smooth, balanced finish. Priced at $225 and exclusively available at the new distillery, collectors may hesitate to open a bottle, but its delectable taste truly deserves to be savored. Visitors can enjoy the distillery’s visitor center and bar while picking up a bottle for their collection.

Eugene’s Yardy Rum Bar Recognized as One of the New York Times’ 50 Best Restaurants in the U.S.

Eugene’s Yardy Rum Bar has gained nationwide recognition, being named one of the New York Times’ 50 best restaurants in the U.S. The restaurant, which features West Indian and Caribbean cuisine, started as a pop-up in 2020 and later operated as a food cart before settling in its current location at 837 Lincoln St. in downtown Eugene in January 2024.

Chef and owner Isaiah Martinez has expressed pride in his restaurant’s mission to educate patrons about Caribbean culture through food. He views culinary experiences as a way to bridge cultural gaps.

This accolade is not the first time Yardy Rum Bar has garnered attention; earlier in the year, Martinez was recognized as a semifinalist for the prestigious James Beard Award for Best Chef: Northwest & Pacific. The rush of customers following the Beard nomination prepared his staff for the recent uptick in business that comes with this latest honor.

Martinez noted that they experienced a significant surge in customer traffic post-nomination, describing the bustling atmosphere as "everyday was a Saturday for a couple of months." As the restaurant heads into a slower season, this recognition will help attract more customers and maintain the quality service that regular patrons expect.

Meghan Markle’s Wine: Crafted by Expert Marketers, Says Insider

Meghan Markle’s Napa Valley Rosé, launched under her lifestyle label As Ever, has garnered mixed reviews from wine experts. The Duchess of Sussex, known for her love of cooking and winemaking, has expanded her brand to include various products alongside her wine. Recent evaluations from a tasting panel revealed differing opinions about the quality of her wine.

Dana Beninati, a classically trained chef and sommelier, rated the rosé a six out of ten. She described the initial sip as "hot on the finish," attributing this sensation to its high alcohol content. Beninati remarked that the wine doesn’t convey the essence of being made with care from family-owned vineyards, suggesting instead it feels like a product created by "expert marketers" rather than Markle herself.

Conversely, Crystl Faye Horton, former wine director at Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse, praised the rosé. She noted the wine’s robust flavor profile and deemed it a good value at $30, indicating that it appears to be crafted with intention and seriousness.

The contrasting feedback highlights the ongoing debate about Markle’s foray into winemaking, with some experts questioning the authenticity of the product while others see potential and quality in her offerings.

Sweet Sips: Exploring Denver’s Buzzing Honey Cocktails + A Delicious Recipe!

Throughout the summer months, honey has become a highlight ingredient in Denver’s cocktail scene, especially at Lady Jane in the LoHi neighborhood. The bar’s general manager, Stuart Weaver, has been experimenting with honey in innovative ways, such as a syrup infused with blistered shishito peppers and another made from fermented orange blossom honey. He has previously used Scottish heather honey to enrich a peaty scotch cocktail called "Nine Deaths."

Weaver emphasizes the versatility of honey, reflecting its unique flavor characteristics that vary depending on the floral sources near the bees. He speaks fondly of his father’s hobbyist beekeeping in Texas and encourages bartenders to explore different honey varieties at local farmers’ markets to find the best pairings for their cocktails.

For those looking to incorporate honey into their cocktails, Weaver suggests a gold rule: dilute your honey. His team utilizes a 3:1 honey-to-water ratio for creating syrup, which is a fundamental component in many honey-based drinks. He also shares a few cocktail recipes that at-home bartenders can easily prepare:

Gold Rush

Shake and fine strain into a rocks glass over a large cube.

Palestinian Beer Breaks Barriers: Available in Britain Thanks to Scottish Brewer Collaboration

A Palestinian beer has made its way to British store shelves despite significant challenges, including a war in the region and strict border controls. This remarkable achievement is attributed to a partnership between the Taybeh Brewing Company from the West Bank and Brewgooder, a Scottish brewer.

Madees Khoury, the brewmaster at Taybeh, described her family’s journey as one filled with obstacles but also resilience. Taybeh Brewing Company, established over three decades ago, is notable for operating in a predominantly Muslim area where alcohol is often prohibited due to religious beliefs. Despite these hurdles, Taybeh continues to thrive through sheer determination.

The brewing company has faced significant fallout since the outbreak of conflict in October 2023, which has led to losses and an increase in violence in the region. With Israeli military actions rising in the West Bank, Taybeh’s operations have been hindered, forcing many local businesses, including bars and hotels, to close their doors due to increased unrest.

Brewgooder reached out to Taybeh to create a collaborative beer aimed at helping the struggling brewery navigate these times. They developed "Sun & Stone," a Mediterranean lager, to both boost Taybeh’s business and raise funds for charity efforts in Gaza and the broader Middle East.

Nadim Khoury, one of Taybeh’s founders, humorously noted the logistical challenges they face, which include navigating Israeli checkpoints and delays that can impact the quality of their product. Despite these setbacks, the partnership with Brewgooder offers a new pathway for distribution without the burdens of border controls within the UK.

The first batch of 180,000 cans was set to be released in 1,600 Co-op stores across the UK, with all profits directed back to Taybeh and local charitable organizations. This collaboration not only signifies a new hope for Taybeh Brewing Co. but also serves as a testament to the power of community and cooperation in overcoming adversity.
