The initial single malt, named Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Twice Barreled Special Release American Single Malt, was a limited edition expression drawn from a single barrel as part of the Jack Daniel’s Special Release Collection. In contrast, the new Jack Daniel’s American Single Malt is a permanent addition to their lineup, though it can only be purchased at airport locations.
Both whiskies share a mashbill of 100 percent malted barley, a characteristic that differentiates them from other American whiskeys. Additionally, they are both subjected to the Lincoln County process, which involves filtering the spirit through 10 feet of charcoal before aging. After spending around five years maturing in new charred oak barrels, the whiskies are finished in Oloroso sherry casks. Master distiller Chris Fletcher explains that the sherry cask finish was necessary to achieve the desired flavor and character of the whiskey. While he acknowledges the similarity to the practice in Scotch whisky production, Fletcher emphasizes that their goal was to create a distinctly American version of single malt.
The newest release maintains a consistent proof of 90, whereas the initial whiskey ranged between 106 and 108 proof depending on the barrel. This ensures that the new single malt provides a balanced and enjoyable drinking experience. Tasting notes describe the whiskey as having a nose of soft oak, fruit, and cocoa, with flavors of dark chocolate-covered nuts and berries on the palate.
Jack Daniel’s American Single Malt is priced at $100 and is available in a one-liter bottle, larger than the typical 750-ml size. While it is currently only accessible at airports worldwide, there is a possibility of future releases in domestic markets.
