Top Alternatives to Simple Syrup for Your Cocktail Creations

We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Many well-loved cocktails incorporate simple syrup to enhance the sweetness of the drink — including an old fashioned, gin fizz, Long Island iced tea, martini, and cosmopolitan, among others. Rather than using plain granulated sugar in a cocktail, bartenders opt for simple syrup, which is essentially granulated sugar that has been dissolved in water. This sweet liquid integrates smoothly into the cocktail, avoiding the issue of sugar settling at the bottom, which can happen with regular sugar. That said, alternatives to simple syrup such as agave nectar, honey, and maple syrup can also be used to sweeten your cocktails.

Though simple syrup is relatively easy to prepare, it primarily contributes a gentle sweetness without adding significant flavor to your beverage. You might prefer an alternative sweetener to create a richer flavor profile or different texture in your cocktail. Alternatively, you may be eager to explore new options. In either case, feel free to substitute simple syrup with an equivalent amount of your chosen sweetener in cocktail recipes.

To craft an exceptional cocktail, balancing the flavors of bitter, sour, acidic, and sweet is essential. Substitutes for simple syrup can introduce just the right amount of sweetness and complexity to your drink.

One well-liked option is agave nectar, which is ideal for enhancing the sweetness of your spicy margarita. This golden liquid comes from the sap of the agave plant, making it a popular addition in tequila-based beverages. For a genuine taste, ensure you choose 100% agave nectar, like Madhava Organic Light Agave. To prepare it as a syrup that blends beautifully in your drinks, you can either boil equal amounts of agave nectar and water or mix some warm water with the agave.

Honey is another excellent alternative for simple syrup, especially since most people already have it at home. It brings a rich and unique flavor to cocktails, complementing citrus ingredients exceptionally well. A perfect example is the bee’s knees, a cocktail that emerged during the Prohibition era, which combines gin, lemon, and honey. To create a lighter syrup for sweetening cocktails, simply boil equal portions of honey and water.

If you enjoy bourbon, maple syrup may be your sweetener of choice. Maple simple syrup pairs wonderfully with the sweet notes of whiskey and the zesty hint of orange in an old fashioned. Due to its thick consistency, it’s advisable to dilute maple syrup by mixing it with equal parts of water.

15 Irresistible Batch Cocktails to Elevate Your Fall Parties

Bartenders share their favorite cozy and crowd-pleasing libations

As autumn’s golden leaves replace the radiant rays of summer, the art of hosting an effortless gathering remains in focus.

Often seen as a transitional season that sidesteps summer barbeques and group beach days while paving the way for holiday cheer, fall actually presents a wealth of occasions to celebrate. From cozy football Sundays at home (and Mondays and Thursdays) to spirited tailgating, festive Halloween gatherings to cherished Thanksgiving dinners, the season is brimming with opportunities to come together.

Like any popular social gathering, autumn events can be greatly enhanced with a batched cocktail; a large-format drink that can be prepared in advance and served individually to guests, allowing the host to avoid the hassle of mixing and measuring, and instead focus on enjoying the celebration!

We gathered over 100 recipes from skilled bartenders to curate a selection of 15 seasonal drinks that are perfect for batching and ideal for cozy get-togethers. Keep reading to discover how to prepare them and uncover the ingredients that make them a great fit for fall festivities.

The lively flavors and hues of this cocktail mirror the bounty of the season, according to Sebastian Acimovic, who oversees the bar program at XR Bar located within Artechouse NYC. Moreover, his punch serves as an excellent accompaniment to autumn dishes like roasted butternut squash soup. “The sweetness of the soup brings out the drink’s fruity aspects, while its warmth harmonizes with the refreshing nature of the punch,” Acimovic explains.

Ingredients (4-6 servings): 8 oz botanical gin, 3 oz lemon juice, 1.5 oz blueberry syrup, 1.5 oz orgeat syrup, 8 dashes Bittermens Elemakule Tiki Bitters, 4 dashes vanilla extract, 5 oz club soda

Method: Mix all ingredients in a pitcher, reserving the club soda. Fill the pitcher with ice cubes until it’s three-quarters full. Stir to chill, then strain the mixture into a punch bowl placed over a large block of ice. Add the club soda on top and garnish with lemon slices and blueberries. Use a ladle for serving alongside punch glasses.

At Loretta’s in Boston, bar manager Rick Falcucci mentions that their fall sangria is becoming a huge hit, selling faster than they can prepare it. It’s not just popular among guests but also favored by bartenders, as they can prepare the cocktail in advance and serve it over ice when requested. “We always suggest it during brunch or with a hot cider donut,” adds Falcucci.

Ingredients (30+ servings): 500ml brandy, 750ml white wine, 750ml apple cider

Method: Mix all ingredients in a bowl or pitcher (without ice). Incorporate 10 cinnamon sticks and two sliced apples; keep the mixture chilled. For serving: coat the rim of a wine glass with cinnamon sugar, fill it with ice, stir or shake the sangria, then pour it over the ice and add a cinnamon stick for garnish.

In this rye-based cocktail crafted by Chelsey Caldabaugh, the beverage director at Yaya Coastal Cuisine in Miami, the warm and comforting spices harmonize beautifully with the zesty citrus notes of fresh orange juice. Chelsey notes, “The pumpkin purée contributes a smooth and earthy texture, while the robust flavor of rye enhances the sweetness of maple syrup.”

Ingredients (12 servings): 1 bottle rye (750 ml), 1.5 cups pumpkin purée, 2 cups fresh orange juice, 2 tablespoons cinnamon, 1 tablespoon allspice, 0.5 cup maple syrup, star anise for garnish.

Method: In a large bowl, combine the pumpkin purée, orange juice, cinnamon, allspice, and maple syrup; then gradually add the rye (Bulleit is a good choice). Chill in the refrigerator for one hour before serving over ice, garnished with a star anise.

According to Gina Broyles, front of house manager at Beautiful South in Charleston, SC, “A hot toddy is a classic choice to begin with, but our twist, Melody, incorporates fig for added depth and sweetness.” She adds, “It’s ideal for packing into a thermos while taking the kids out for trick-or-treating.” Additionally, it pairs wonderfully with sweet, buttery treats like shortbread cookies and pecan pie, making it perfect for holiday gatherings.

Ingredients (10 servings): 20 oz. rye whiskey, 10 cups water, 10 oz lemon juice, 10 oz fig jam

Method: In a large slow cooker set to high, mix all ingredients except the rye for two hours. Whisk for at least 30 seconds to ensure everything is well combined. Serve in a wide teacup over two ounces of rye, garnished with grated cinnamon. Keep the slow cooker on low during serving.

This gin-centric cocktail “captures the essence of fall with its deep pomegranate juice, enhanced by the earthy, herbal scent of a rosemary garnish,” notes Amanda Brinton, food and beverage operations manager at JW Marriott Orlando, Grande Lakes. She recommends enjoying it with delectable fall appetizers such as stuffed mushrooms, bruschetta, or a charcuterie board.

Ingredients (10 servings): 20 oz Bombay Sapphire London dry gin, 10 oz Pom Wonderful pomegranate juice, tonic water (to top off), 10 sprigs of rosemary (for garnish)

Method: Start by mixing the gin and pomegranate juice in a sizable pitcher or container. Stir thoroughly to ensure the two liquids are well combined, then place it in the refrigerator to chill until you’re ready to serve. When you’re set to serve, fill highball glasses with ice. Pour about 3 oz of the combined gin and pomegranate juice into each glass. Finish by topping off with chilled tonic water (3-4 oz, depending on your preference). For a hint of herbal aroma and elegance, garnish each glass with a sprig of fresh rosemary.

Simple yet delightful, Jeff Coles, co-owner of Guaranteed Authentic Hospitality in Washington, DC, embraces this recipe to make the most of the bounty of apples he and his wife gather each year. He favors Fuji apples but assures that you can select a tarter or sweeter apple based on what you enjoy. In fact, he invites you to view this recipe as a starting point to customize the drink: “I highly recommend incorporating ginger, orange peels, cranberry, or nutmeg,” he shares, noting as a bonus that “it makes your home smell amazing.”

Ingredients (6-8 servings): 12 oz bourbon, 8-10 apples, quartered, 4 cinnamon sticks (or 1 heaping tbsp ground), 1/2 cup packed brown sugar, 20 allspice berries (or 1 tbsp ground), enough water to cover the mixture, spice bag (optional)

Method: Slice 10 apples into quarters (no need to peel or core them) and place them in a large stock pot. Cover the apples with water. Add 1/2 cup of brown sugar, about 4 cinnamon sticks (or 1 heaping tbsp of ground cinnamon), and 20 allspice berries (or 1 tbsp ground allspice). Bring the mixture to a boil for an hour, then reduce the heat, cover, and let it simmer for another two hours. Once done, turn off the heat and use a potato masher to mash the apples into a pulp. Allow the mixture to cool enough to handle, then strain it through a mesh strainer to eliminate the solids. You may want to strain it again. Taste the mixture and, if desired, sweeten further with up to an additional 1/2 cup of brown sugar. This cider can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to a week. When it’s time for your gathering, reheat the cider in a crock pot and stir in the bourbon (Coles mentions that dark rum or brandy can work well, too).

A seasonal take on a classic cocktail, the Fall Spice Boulevardier is appealing to enthusiasts of both negronis and old fashioneds, not to mention home bartenders. “This drink is ideal for autumn gatherings as it’s remarkably simple to make and serve, providing a stress-free option for hosts,” explains David Arciniega, executive chef and beverage director at Thompson San Antonio Riverwalk. “Its rich flavors pair beautifully with savory, smoky, or grilled dishes, making it a flexible choice for fall events.”

Ingredients (20+ servings): 750ml (one bottle) Campari, 750ml Antica Formula vermouth, 750ml bourbon, cinnamon sticks, 0.75 cup allspice berries

Method: Mix all ingredients in a sealed container and allow it to rest for a week. For a single serving: pour the mixture over a large ice cube in a rocks glass and stir until the drink is diluted to 20 percent water.

“This martini is crisp, dry, smoky, and offers a refreshing twist of apple flavor,” remarks Sam Lynch, co-owner of Layla in NYC. “We incorporate Salers in our vermouth blend; this extremely dry vermouth presents intriguing notes of pepper and sesame.”

Ingredients (10 servings): 12.5 oz apple-infused mezcal, 12.5 oz Calvados, 5 oz Salers aperitif, 2.5 oz liquid gold

Method: Slice two apples and combine them in a bottle of mezcal, allowing it to steep for 48 hours. Once ready, add all ingredients to a pitcher filled with ice, stirring until thoroughly chilled. Strain the mixture and serve in a couple of glasses, each adorned with a thin apple slice as garnish.

At The Hari in London, bar manager Andrea Manca has crafted a beloved fall cocktail featuring the hotel’s exclusive Hari gin. However, she assures that any London Dry gin can be used to recreate this drink at home. “It’s an elegant, seasonal twist on the classic Bramble cocktail,” she explains, highlighting its earthy sweetness from blackberries, the warmth from fresh ginger, and a festive fizz contributed by the sparkling water.

Ingredients (8-10 servings): 2 cups London Dry gin, 1.5 cups blackberry liqueur (such as Crème de Mûre or Chambord), 1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice, 0.5 cups simple syrup, a 1-inch slice of fresh ginger, thinly sliced, 1 cup sparkling water or tonic, 1 cup blackberries (preferably fresh), 1 thinly sliced lemon, fresh mint or rosemary (for garnish)

Preparation: In a sizable pitcher or punch bowl, blend the gin, blackberry liqueur, lemon juice, simple syrup, and ginger slices. Mix well, then add the blackberries and place the mixture in the refrigerator for a minimum of two hours to allow the flavors to meld and the cocktail to chill. Just prior to serving, incorporate the sparkling water for an effervescent touch, then pour into glasses over ice and decorate with lemon slices, fresh mint, and/or sprigs of rosemary.

According to Sam Watson, bar manager at Sister Ship in Nantucket, this drink is guaranteed to impress, particularly when enjoyed during a pumpkin carving happy hour. “The chai tea syrup contributes a warm fall essence, while the egg whites enhance the drink’s layered mouthfeel,” he explains.

Ingredients (serves 10): 15 oz bourbon, 7.5 oz chai tea syrup, 7.5 oz Lillet blanc, 5 oz lemon juice, 12 dashes angostura bitters, 0.5 oz egg white per cocktail (approximately 6 oz total)

Preparation: Pour all the ingredients, excluding the egg whites, into a pitcher and refrigerate until ready to serve. Store the egg whites in a separate sealable container also in the fridge. When ready to serve, pour 3-4 oz of the bourbon mixture into a shaker with 0.5 oz egg white and no ice — dry shake for 30 seconds, then add ice and shake for another 30 seconds. Strain the mixture into a coupe glass and garnish with grated nutmeg. The double shaking process results in “the ideal frothy texture,” Watson advises.

“The combination of spicy whisky, sweet amaro, and the cool smokiness of mezcal creates a cocktail that is both well balanced and hearty,” remarks Filippo deMagistris, co-owner of il Casale Lexington. “This cocktail is simple to prepare, making it ideal for batching on chilly fall evenings, following apple picking trips or for Halloween celebrations.”

Ingredients (20+ servings): 750ml (1 bottle) Meletti Amaro, 750ml mezcal silver, 750ml rye whiskey

Method: Mix all ingredients and serve over ice in a rocks glass. Finish each drink with five dashes of Angostura bitters, stir well, and garnish with an orange slice (either fresh or dried).

Melissa Watson, bartender and marketing director at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, shares that traditional autumn flavors blend beautifully in this variation of the classic Moscow Mule. “This cocktail is fabulous for Sunday football gatherings or Thanksgiving celebrations,” she notes, adding that its rich and sweet profile pairs excellently with hearty fall dishes like roasted meats or classic pumpkin pie.

Ingredients (10-12 servings): 2 cups vodka, 3 cups apple cider, 4 cups ginger beer, 0.5 cup caramel syrup, apple slices and cinnamon sticks for garnish

Method: In a large pitcher or drink dispenser, combine the vodka and apple cider. Incorporate the caramel syrup and stir until the mixture is well blended. Just before serving, carefully mix in the ginger beer to maintain the fizzy texture. Pour over ice in copper mugs, adding apple slices and a cinnamon stick for a delightful autumnal touch.

Inspired by the Long Island Iced Tea cocktail, NYC-based bartender and consultant Alyssa Sartor shares that this cocktail is ideal for fall, as it can be enjoyed either hot or cold. It’s also a favorite for Halloween gatherings due to its vibrant orange color and comforting flavor. “Feel free to add a spooky garnish to personalize it,” advises Sartor.

Ingredients (30 servings): 50 oz vodka, 25 oz Singani 63, 25 oz ginger liqueur, 25 oz cinnamon or clove syrup, 25 oz Thai tea powder

Preparation Method: For a chilled version: Combine all ingredients in a sizable container with 30 oz of water for dilution. Stir well and pour 3 to 4 oz of the mixture over ice along with 1 teaspoon of Thai tea powder for each cocktail. For a hot version: Transfer the mixture to a tea kettle with 30 oz of water for dilution. Pour 3 to 4 oz into a heatproof cup and mix in 1 teaspoon of Thai tea powder.

Isabel “Izzy” Tulloch, a bartender at Milady’s NYC, characterizes this cocktail as “a twist on the Manhattan, featuring reposado tequila complemented by a playful hint of chocolate and vanilla.” The straightforward preparation makes it an ideal option to keep in the freezer until your visitors arrive. “Being someone with a preference for sweets, the subtle vanilla and chocolate combined with the caramel undertones of this drink pair beautifully with fun-sized chocolate bars,” Tulloch notes. “It’s the perfect beverage for your Halloween celebration!”

Ingredients (Serves 10): 20 oz reposado tequila, 2.5 oz Punt e Mes, 2.5 oz Carpano Antica, 5 oz Tempus Fugit Creme de Cacao A La Vanille, 20 drops of Bittermens Xocolatl Mole Bitters, 8 oz distilled water

Preparation Method: Mix all ingredients together and store them in the freezer. Serve in a Nick & Nora glass or over a large ice cube. Squeeze a lime twist over the cocktail and discard it, then garnish with a Luxardo cherry.

Every gathering calls for a martini, and the convenience of preparing the mixture a day in advance is a definite bonus. Jon Payne, a bartender at Peychaud’s in New Orleans, enjoys presenting this alongside a DIY garnish bar, allowing guests to personalize their martinis to their liking. “It serves as a fantastic conversation starter and icebreaker,” he notes. Additionally, he highlights its versatility, stating, “it pairs wonderfully with a variety of foods, from grilled meats and spicy snacks to vegetable platters and light desserts.”

Ingredients (30 servings): 750ml Plymouth gin, 375ml Bordiga Extra Dry Vermouth, 75ml water for dilution.

Method: Mix the gin, vermouth, and water in a glass swing top bottle and place it in the freezer until the event. Serve in chilled martini glasses.

10 Overrated Classic Cocktails and What to Order Instead: Bartenders Weigh In

Recently, Business Insider reached out to bartenders to discover which classic cocktails they consider to be overrated.

According to their insights, beverages like Long Island ice teas, espresso martinis, cosmopolitans, and tequila sunrises tend to be fairly simplistic.

Furthermore, there is significant potential for variability in drinks such as margaritas and Moscow mules.

When enjoying a happy hour or a night out, the last concern anyone wants is squandering $20 on a subpar drink. However, this doesn’t necessarily imply that one should always opt for something mundane.

Business Insider consulted with bartenders to discover which classic cocktails may not live up to their reputation and what alternative drinks you might enjoy instead.

Margaritas are often regarded as overhyped and vary significantly in quality.

Danny Guerena, a bartender at Beeline Bar in Ohio, shared with Business Insider that the plethora of margarita recipes means you might not find the same quality or style at different bars.

As a better alternative, he suggests trying a paloma. This drink is another tequila-based cocktail, but with grapefruit soda added, it offers a more intricate flavor and greater reliability.

“Paloma provides the perfect tequila experience without diluting itself into countless variations, flavors, and ingredients,” Guerena stated.

You no longer need to endure sipping on a heavy Manhattan.

Karli Sandos, a bartender at The Violet Hour in Chicago, mentioned that Manhattans are the first drink that comes to her mind when considering overrated cocktails.

“When I have the chance to order a well-crafted drink, I lean towards a Vieux Carre,” she shared with BI. “The rye, vermouth, and bitters are still there, but the addition of brandy and herbal Benedictine introduces a wonderful complexity and smooths out any rough edges that might arise.”

It might be wise to pass on Long Island iced teas.

Ron Oleksa, a bartender and mixologist at Link & Pin in North Carolina, advised against ordering the Long Island iced teas.

“This cocktail lacks clarity and seems muddled with minimal complexity,” he shared with BI.

As an alternative, he suggested trying a Bee’s Knees. This cocktail mixes gin, fresh lemon juice, and honey for a citrus-forward experience with greater depth.

Espresso martinis have been criticized for their lack of complexity.

Recently, a surge in popularity for espresso martinis has been noted. However, Cierra Jaramillo, a bartender at Whiskey Tango Foxtrot in Texas, expressed her reservations about this popular beverage.

“It often lacks depth, offering a one-dimensional, overly sweet flavor profile that feels more like a sugary jolt than a refined cocktail,” she explained.

Instead, she recommended the carajillo, which features a harmonious mix of rich espresso and Licor 43, a Spanish liqueur infused with notes of citrus, vanilla, and spices.

Appletinis tend to be overly sweet.

According to Jaramillo, vodka-based Appletinis represent a cocktail trend from the early 2000s that has lost its appeal.

She remarked, “Appletinis often taste too sweet and artificial. Instead, opt for a whiskey sour. It combines sweet, sour, and savory elements beautifully, featuring the richness of whiskey alongside the zesty freshness of lemon juice.”

Mojitos frequently disappoint as well.

Oscar Garcia, who serves as the lead bartender at Corvina in Florida, believes that mojitos often fall short of the mark.

“Creating a mojito demands significant muddling for every drink, which can be quite tedious in a bustling bar environment,” he shared with BI. “Moreover, the mint can be overly muddled, resulting in a diluted flavor that leaves one yearning for a better balance.”

For those in search of an equally sweet and refreshing cocktail, Garcia suggests opting for a rum daiquiri or a hurricane instead.

He finds cosmopolitans to be rather disappointing.

Carrie Bradshaw brought the cosmopolitan into the limelight on “Sex and the City,” yet Jaramillo argues that the cocktail doesn’t quite hold its treasured cultural reputation.

“To us, this drink feels more like a blast from the past rather than one that reflects the depth we aim for,” she shared with BI.

Instead, consider enjoying a French 75, a delightful gin cocktail finished with a splash of Champagne for a fizzy delight.

Moscow mules, on the other hand, can often be overly watered down.

Francesco Lafranconi, a respected mixologist, bartender, and vice president of beverage and hospitality at Carversteak in Las Vegas, shared with BI that capturing the vibrant and refreshing taste of a Moscow mule can be quite challenging.

“The drink’s increase in popularity has resulted in an influx of subpar variations made with various sugar-laden ginger syrups or diluted ginger beer, which can lessen its overall charm,” he remarked.

While the allure of sipping from a copper mug is undeniable, the simplistic flavor profile often fails to meet expectations. A vodka soda with lime typically offers a more reliable choice.

Though a tequila sunrise catches the eye, it falls short in terms of depth and richness.

Abraham Flota, who serves as a bar manager and head bartender at Prospect in San Francisco, cautioned against being misled by the visually appealing gradient of a tequila sunrise.

“The tequila sunrise is primarily made with orange juice and grenadine,” he shared with BI. “It lacks depth and can seem somewhat flat in terms of flavor.”

The bartender suggested opting for a paloma instead of the vibrant cocktail.

Additionally, he expressed that sex on the beach is overrated.

The well-known cocktail saw a surge in popularity during the 1980s and 1990s, yet Flota mentioned that its excessively sweet flavor tends to overshadow the vodka foundation.

“Sex on the Beach, with its blend of peach schnapps, cranberry, and orange juice, can come off as just juice with minimal depth,” he explained. “In contrast, you might want to consider a Cape Codder, which is a refined combination of vodka and cranberry juice, enhanced with a splash of lime.”

Sweetened condensed milk

Begin by dissolving the gelatin packets in a saucepan over low heat. While this is happening, prepare the Jell-O flavors of grape, peach, and melon separately, adding vodka to each mixture if desired. For the white layer, combine a cup of the gelatin mixture with the sweetened condensed milk and set it aside. Then, stir half a cup of the gelatin mixture into each of the colored Jell-O vodka mixtures.

Once everything is ready, add one teaspoon of the colored Jell-O to each cup placed in a chilled mini muffin pan. Afterward, put the pan in the freezer for about three minutes until the mixture solidifies. Afterwards, take the pan out and add one teaspoon of the sweetened condensed milk, then return it to the freezer for another three minutes. Repeat this layering process until all colors and mixtures have been used, and finally place it back in the freezer to let them set thoroughly.

Barmasters Share Creative Ways to Incorporate Coconut Water in Your Cocktails

Coconut water is a delicious and nutritious alternative to plain water, offering a burst of flavor while remaining a healthy choice. Comprised of 94% water and containing minimal fat, it boasts an impressive array of electrolytes like potassium, calcium, and magnesium. With all these benefits, why not elevate your drink experience? Incorporating coconut water into your cocktails is a superb way to add excitement.

Bartenders often have specific preferences regarding the water they choose for their cocktails. From hard to soft water and the purity of the ice, every detail matters as they seek to refine their craft. Adding coconut water not only enhances the overall taste but also contributes to the cocktail’s dilution, giving you a game-changing approach to creating excellent drinks.

We had the opportunity to converse with Channing Centeno, a talented Filipino bartender and sommelier with Vita Coco. He shared valuable insights on how to best utilize coconut water in cocktails, along with contributions from other cocktail and coconut water professionals such as Bridget Albert from Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits, Jacoby Morciglio, bar manager at Adrift Tiki Bar, and Lindsey Neumayer, who runs the food blog A Recipe For Fun.

For further reading, check out: We Tried TikTok’s Tequila Apple Juice Cocktail And It Didn’t Go As Planned

Coconut water is packed with essential vitamins and nutrients that help keep you hydrated, particularly crucial when you consume alcohol. Enriched with potassium and vitamin C, among others, coconut water serves as an excellent substitute for bar mixers for cocktails. By providing hydration, cocktails made with coconut water may lead to a reduced risk of experiencing a hangover the next day.

Many of the top coconut water brands feature products with minimal to no added sugars. Bridget Albert, a mixologist at Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits, explains that this low sugar content keeps coconut water lower in calories compared to sugary cocktail mixers. For instance, Vita Coco contains less than 1% sugar, 2% sodium, and 4% carbohydrates while boasting 10% potassium and 40% vitamin C. According to Jacoby Morciglio, it’s quite easy to find a quality coconut water brand that has very little sugar and no unnecessary carbonation, and switching to such a choice can enhance your drinking experience.

This article will delve into the effective use of coconut water in cocktails, though Albert points out that it can also be a great ingredient in mocktails for improved hydration. While alcohol naturally leads to dehydration, coconut water can still play a supportive role in maintaining hydration. If you’re opting for a non-alcoholic beverage, the natural electrolytes found in coconut water, such as sodium, will help keep you hydrated throughout the evening.

Have you ever been curious about the reason behind a bartender shaking or stirring your drink before serving it to you? Beyond offering a refreshing chill, the act of shaking and stirring cocktails with ice helps dilute the drink, making it more enjoyable with a balanced flavor profile, as noted by Channing Centeno. Centeno suggests that cocktails should ideally have a dilution rate of about 20%; without this, drinks may be overly sweet or overly sour. Diluting cocktails tempers the flavors, and incorporating coconut water can enhance both this process and the overall drink experience.

The taste of coconut water is naturally sweet with a nutty undertone, complemented by a touch of tropical essence. It offers a refreshing quality, making it an excellent addition to cocktails without the need for shaking. Next time you’re contemplating a shaken cocktail, consider adding a splash or two of coconut water instead. The flavors will harmonize beautifully, resulting in a smooth, easy-to-drink cocktail that’s both delightful and invigorating.

This technique is akin to making coffee or orange juice ice cubes to prevent dilution in your drinks. Utilizing coconut water for your ice cubes is an excellent method to dilute your cocktail while infusing it with flavor. These coconut water ice cubes can be used for shaking, stirring, or simply poured over with your spirit of choice. Regardless of your approach, coconut water ice cubes will undoubtedly enhance your drink compared to standard ice cubes.

Channing Centeno shares, “Shaking a margarita, gimlet, or any sour-style drink with coconut water ice introduces wonderfully tropical and refreshing elements to any cocktail.” This stands in contrast to regular ice cubes, which tend to dilute drinks more than needed. Since coconut water ice cubes don’t contain artificial sweeteners, they won’t make your drink taste overly sweet or syrupy. Additionally, you can get creative by adding fruits like pineapple or papaya to the ice cube tray before freezing to create distinctive coconut ice cubes tailored to your cocktail.

As an alternative, consider using fruit-flavored coconut water. Brands like Vita Coco offer a peach mango flavor, while Goya has a guava option, among others. Centeno emphasizes that coconut water ice cubes also pair wonderfully with whiskey or dark rum, making them a perfect choice for a smooth nightcap.

Espresso martinis are currently trending, and what could be better than crafting a distinctive variant by adding coconut water? Channing Centeno suggests using coconut water as the foundation for your cold brew, which can then be transformed into an espresso martini. If you’re unable to access espresso at home, cold brew concentrate can serve as a suitable substitute.

To create this, steep your chosen coffee grounds in water using a 1-to-4 ratio (in ounces). Instead of standard water, opt for coconut water to infuse a sweet, nutty taste into your cold brew concentrate, which helps mitigate the bitterness often found in espresso martinis. This technique can similarly be applied to iced tea.

Steep your tea leaves or bags in coconut water instead of regular water, and you can incorporate this refined iced tea blend into your upcoming Arnold Palmer — just add lemonade. If you prefer to add some spirits, bourbon or whiskey would pair well with the coconut water flavors. To merge a few of these ideas, consider adding coconut water ice cubes to the cocktail to enhance the taste experience. However, it’s essential to be cautious with the amount of coconut water used; as Jacoby Morciglio points out, “Excess coconut water can be quite dangerous with its high level of potassium.”

If you are open to the idea of losing a bit of fizz, substituting coconut water for soda water in cocktails is an excellent method to elevate your drink. This substitution works particularly well for tropical beverages, such as mojitos and piña coladas. Mojitos are usually crafted with mint, white rum, lime juice, simple syrup, and club soda, but according to Bridget Albert, you can enhance a mojito’s tropical essence by using coconut water instead of club soda.

A piña colada is a delightful drink that often comes together by mixing club soda with cream of coconut, crushed pineapple, and pineapple juice. If you enjoy the taste of coconut, a piña colada is an excellent choice for incorporating coconut water to enhance those flavors. For an even richer coconut experience, consider using coconut water ice cubes in a frozen piña colada before blending.

For those looking to craft non-alcoholic cocktails, substituting soda water with coconut water is a fantastic alternative that promotes hydration. Mocktails, being alcohol-free, benefit from the added electrolytes found in coconut water, according to Jacoby Morciglio, which enhances both hydration and flavor. “The coconut water brings a depth that most non-alcoholic drinks lack,” Morciglio adds.

Coconut water is incredibly versatile and pairs well with various ingredients, yet it’s wise to keep cocktail recipes uncomplicated when using it. The appeal of coconut water lies in its purity, health benefits, and robust flavor compared to other mixers; too many ingredients can dilute its essence.

For a straightforward yet effective combination, Jacoby Morciglio suggests enjoying scotch with coconut water as a Caribbean classic. “This experience was astonishing,” Morciglio shared. “The slightly salty, refreshing nature of coconut water enhances the smoky notes of the scotch.” Additionally, a team member created a non-alcoholic Blue Hawaiian with coconut water, which Morciglio believes added significant depth and flavor to this tropical classic.

Lindsey Neumayer emphasizes simplicity when it comes to cocktails, especially with coconut water. She states, “When all else fails, you can never go wrong with coconut water, lime juice, and your rum of choice for a refreshing cocktail that’ll put you in a Caribbean vacation state of mind.” Coconut water is versatile, complementing various fruity flavors and pairing beautifully with dark, distilled spirits such as rum and scotch.

When hosting events, the chaos of creating personalized cocktails for each guest can be overwhelming. This is where freezer door drinks come in handy. These are large-batch cocktails typically stored in their original liquor bottles. For example, if you’re preparing freezer door margaritas, mix around 750 milliliters of margarita mix and pour it into an empty tequila bottle, leaving it in the fridge for self-service by your guests.

Adding coconut water to your freezer door cocktails is an excellent way to achieve the right dilution without the need to shake each drink separately. Jacoby Morciglio notes, “Because of its high water content, we can play around with the substitution of water…. We can dilute [cocktail mixtures] down with coconut water instead to balance the drink and add a unique twist.” Morciglio suggests using coconut water in freezer door martinis, which consist of water, dry vermouth, and gin—or vodka if you prefer.

Almost any cocktail can transform into a freezer door cocktail. By selecting a high-proof alcohol and limiting the amount of mixers, you can ensure a steady supply of delicious cocktails at your next gathering. Incorporating coconut water allows for fewer mixers, as it brings its own sweet, nutty flavor profile to the drink.

Just like any other product, it’s important to be cautious about preservatives and excessive added ingredients when it comes to coconut water. Many consumers appreciate coconut water for its natural qualities, so opting for brands that maintain this authenticity is recommended. Lindsey Neumayer points out that while canned coconut water tends to be more affordable, refrigerated coconut water is typically the better choice.

“Generally speaking, coconut waters that require refrigeration tend to be less processed and contain fewer preservatives, resulting in a cleaner and purer flavor,” Neumayer explains. Furthermore, it’s crucial to always read the ingredients list on the coconut water you buy to identify any added preservatives or sugars, as these can negatively impact the taste of your cocktails.

Channing Centeno from Vita Coco claims that the best source of coconut water is fresh coconuts from local growers, a sentiment echoed by Jacoby Morciglio. Morciglio specifically recommends Thai coconuts, although both agree that fresh options can be challenging to find. When fresh coconuts are unavailable, Morciglio and his team typically opt for Vita Coco. No matter which coconut water brand you decide on, Centeno suggests choosing a shelf-stable coconut water for convenience, available in boxed, bottled, or canned formats.

Even though coconut water is a versatile ingredient for cocktails, some drinks are not well-suited for its inclusion, according to experts. Lindsey Neumayer states that she “wouldn’t recommend using coconut water in cocktails served hot, or those featuring strong savory or overly bitter notes, as its delicate flavor could be easily overshadowed.” Therefore, it may be wise to refrain from adding coconut water to boozy hot chocolate, spiked apple cider, or other typically warm beverages.

Bridget Albert highlights that while hot drinks are a popular choice, some cocktails already possess unique flavors that could be overwhelmed by the inclusion of coconut water. A perfect illustration of this is the Negroni; Albert points out that the coconut water might not harmonize well with its flavors. The Negroni combines gin, vermouth, and Campari, resulting in a flavor profile that would clash with the distinctive nutty and tropical notes of coconut water.

To best incorporate coconut water, it’s advisable to pair it with flavors that complement and enhance its taste, rather than opting for more bitter ingredients that may create discord. Channing Centeno, a sommelier from Vita Coco, suggests cocktails such as a mango daiquiri, pineapple-infused beverages, and a spiced old fashioned. By integrating coconut water with fruity and tropical elements, or with spirits like whiskey, scotch, or rum, you can truly elevate your cocktail experience.

After all, Halloween is the best holiday of the year (controversial statement to some, I know). For starters, there are the costumes and makeup, which present infinite opportunities to dress like your favorite pop culture icon. Then, there are the parties, which are usually complete with all kinds of fun, spooky themes. And don’t even get me started about the candy. (The amount of Reese’s peanut butter pumpkins and bags of Swedish Fish I’ve purchased throughout the years could be considered sinful.)

That said, I know that candy isn’t everyone’s thing. If that’s you, consider taking this as a sign to try your hand at mixology and get into the true fall spirit with some scary yet delicious cocktails. It’s also the perfect activity if you plan on having people over. After all, the secret to hosting is putting effort into the small details, and making themed drinks is not only fun but a great way to celebrate the holiday.

In this list, we’ve rounded up recipes for the most festive Halloween cocktails we could find. From super eerie blood-like beverages to cute candy corn-inspired libations, they’ll get you in the right mood for a spooktacular time. And of course, for those who are alcohol-free, all of these cocktails can be made into mocktails with zero-proof spirits (or, just skipping out on the alcohol altogether). Whether you’re hosting a full-blown party or a chill, three-person girls’ night, these Halloween-themed drinks will add the perfect touch to any gathering.

This recipe from Noshing With The Nolands highlights a blend of vodka, pink cranberry juice cocktail, and black cherry juice. To achieve a richer red hue—crucial for a drink named Dracula’s Kiss—you can mix in a splash of grenadine. The final concoction is sweet, tart, and an ideal choice for a Halloween dinner gathering. To enhance the spooky vibe, consider creating a candied blood droplet rim using corn syrup, red food coloring, and black cherry juice, and throw in some candy vampire teeth for added fun.

If you’re envisioning a witch-themed party, this drink is a must-try. This recipe from Wow It’s Veggie is delightfully simple to prepare and only calls for three ingredients: vodka, purple Gatorade, and orange liqueur. To crown the drink, you can finish it off with a candied rim of purple sanding sugar. The cherry on top? The presence of electrolytes means you can enjoy it without fretting too much about a hangover.

<pThis recipe from Brunch and Batter gives a thrilling twist to the classic Bloody Mary. While the foundation remains consistent (tomato juice, hot sauce, vodka, and the usual garnishes), it takes a chilling turn with its eyeball decoration. For a savory element, consider crafting eyes from mozzarella balls and olives, or opt for marshmallows for a sweet surprise.

This recipe from Emily Fabulous is both eerie and tasty. It’s composed of gin, elderflower liqueur, lime juice, and lychee syrup, catering to those who appreciate a sweet cocktail. To get that vibrant green shade, add some green food coloring, and for a spooky eyeball garnish, fresh lychee works perfectly. This drink would also suit BRAT-themed gatherings, just leave out the eyeballs.

Candy corn tends to spark intense opinions—you either love it or you don’t. This recipe from Mantitlement is a treat for those who adore the sweet, buttery flavor of candy corn. Made with cake-flavored vodka, candy corn, pineapple juice, and heavy cream, it requires the candy corn to soak in the vodka for at least 6 hours. So, plan to prepare it the night before for the best results.

Want a conversation starter for your gathering? This recipe from Delish is sure to grab attention. All you need is strawberry Jell-o mix, whipped cream-flavored vodka, and Cool Whip to create a jiggly, boozy brain that’ll have everyone talking.

Take your party experience up a notch with these Blood Bag Cocktails. While you have the option to fill your blood bags with any type of red alcohol, this recipe from Cuisine and Cocktails combines vodka, passionfruit tea, and cranberry juice for a flavorful and zesty drink.

This fiery recipe from Difford’s Guide will give you a cocktail experience that’s not for the faint of heart. To craft this drink, gather a red chili pepper, raspberries, aged rum, and cranberry juice. Unpacking the Myth of Cortisol Cocktails: Can They Truly Balance Your Hormones?

Social media often buzzes with new wellness trends, and the current hot topic is the health benefits of cortisol cocktails.

This interesting blend doesn’t actually include alcohol but is made up of a variety of minerals and vitamins. Many influencers recommend this drink as an effective solution for issues ranging from fatigue to stress relief.

Recently, searches for “cortisol detox drink” have jumped by 277% in just one month, and TikTok videos that demonstrate how to make these cortisol cocktails have accumulated over 870,000 views, indicating a growing curiosity in using this mix to manage cortisol levels.

While it’s tempting to join the trend, it’s worth questioning whether these cocktails can truly regulate hormones and mitigate stress, or if we should approach them with a degree of skepticism.

Cortisol, most commonly known as the stress hormone, is produced and regulated in adrenal glands located near the top of the kidneys. These glands affect both the central nervous system and the endocrine system.

“Cortisol is your body’s primary stress hormone, and it’s essential for many functions—regulating blood sugar, inflammation, and even your sleep cycle,” explains Nutrition expert Kyle Crowley at Protein Works.

Crowley says cortisol is not the villain it’s made out to be.

“The problem is that in our high-stress world, cortisol levels can stay elevated for too long, leading to issues like fatigue, weight gain, and sleep disruption,” he explains.

“However, the increase in wellness trends focused on cortisol has convinced many individuals that they continually deal with cortisol imbalances. In most cases, cortisol is merely performing its natural functions. It’s actually our lifestyle choices—like inadequate sleep, excessive work, and ongoing stress—that cause cortisol levels to remain high unnecessarily.”

Cortisol cocktails, typically composed of ingredients such as orange juice, coconut water, sea salt, and occasionally cream of tartar or magnesium, are marketed as a natural method for restoring the body’s electrolytes and enhancing adrenal health.

Proponents of the cocktail suggest that the vitamin C in orange juice, along with the sodium in sea salt, and the potassium found in coconut water and cream of tartar, help rejuvenate the adrenal glands.

While Crowley remains cautious about labeling it as a panacea, he recognizes some legitimate benefits from its core components:

Vitamin C from orange juice: Orange juice is packed with vitamin C, crucial for boosting the immune system and enhancing the body’s stress management capabilities. “Vitamin C is vital for the functioning of adrenal glands, which have high concentrations of this vitamin,” Crowley notes. “It helps in the regulation of cortisol production.”

Sodium from sea salt: Sodium is essential in maintaining the balance of electrolytes, necessary for proper adrenal function. “Chronic stress or fatigue can lead to the loss of vital electrolytes,” Crowley states. “Sea salt supplies the sodium needed to maintain fluid balance and replenish electrolyte levels in the body.”

Potassium from coconut water and cream of tartar: Coconut water is a natural source of potassium, crucial for balancing sodium levels in the body and supporting muscle function and energy. “Cream of tartar, often used in cortisol cocktails, provides an additional source of potassium, essential for electrolyte balance,” Crowley mentions.

While Crowley mentions that the drink is harmless, he also points out a significant problem with trends like cortisol cocktails—the perception of them as immediate solutions.

“The ingredients are generally healthy and can certainly offer a refreshing pick-me-up,” he explains. “But to believe that this drink will single-handedly restore adrenal health or drastically reduce stress is missing the bigger picture.

“We seem to live in a world where people want fast solutions to complex issues,” Crowley continues. “But stress, and how it impacts our cortisol levels, can’t be fixed with a single drink or supplement.”

Crowley says prioritising quality sleep, practising mindfulness, and eating a nutrient-dense diet are what will truly balance your hormones and lower cortisol levels over time.

“You don’t need a special mocktail for this,” he explains. “Simply eating a variety of fruits, vegetables, and staying hydrated throughout the day will provide the same nutrients, often in better balance.”

Cortisol cocktails may be a fun, nutrient-packed drink, but they should be viewed as part of a bigger picture, not a cure-all.

Instead Crowley advises a multi-faceted approach to managing stress and hormone health:

Sleep. Sleep is one of the most powerful tools for regulating cortisol. “When you’re sleep-deprived, your cortisol levels remain elevated, which can lead to a host of issues, including increased stress and difficulty maintaining a healthy weight,” Crowley explains.

Exercise. Regular exercise is a great way to manage stress, but Crowley says balance is key. “Over-exercising can actually spike cortisol levels, so it’s important to mix in lower-intensity activities like walking or yoga to keep cortisol in check,” he explains.

Balanced diet. Crowley emphasizes the importance of consuming fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats, outlining that these food groups provide essential nutrients necessary for stress management and maintaining the health of your adrenal glands.

Stress management. According to Crowley, engaging in mindfulness practices such as meditation or deep breathing exercises can effectively reduce cortisol levels. He notes, “It’s not always about doing more; sometimes, it’s about slowing down and allowing your body to reset.”

Consistency. Crowley asserts that effective cortisol management relies on regularity rather than temporary solutions. “It’s easy to get caught up in wellness trends, but real change comes from daily habits that support your body holistically,” he states.

“A cortisol cocktail won’t fix everything. It’s your long-term commitment to reducing stress, getting good sleep, and nourishing your body that will make the difference,” Crowley concludes.

As always, if you’re experiencing symptoms such as chronic stress, fatigue, or significant changes in your body, seeking professional help is crucial.

“A healthcare provider can offer personalised recommendations based on your unique health needs and help address any underlying issues,” Crowley adds. “Always prioritise medical advice over social media trends to ensure a safe and effective approach to health.”
