Simple and Delicious Whisky Cocktails for Beginners

Post Views: 506

If you’re intrigued by whisky or just beginning to explore the world of this rich spirit, one of the finest ways to embark on your journey is through cocktails. These drinks serve as an excellent introduction to appreciating whisky.

One cocktail to consider is the Ginger Highball, made with Johnnie Walker Black Label.

For those new to whisky wanting to deepen their understanding, starting with cocktails is a simple and effective way to begin. A fantastic method for cultivating a taste for whisky’s layered and nuanced flavors is to sample it in a cocktail form. Dr. Emma Walker, the Master Blender for Johnnie Walker, the leading blended Scotch whisky brand globally, recommends focusing on the variety of flavors available. In her position, Walker curates flavor inspirations from the brand’s staggering 10 million casks stored throughout Scotland—the largest collection of whiskies worldwide. Despite the vast array of flavor options, Walker sees it as a unique chance to invite everyone into the world of whisky. “There’s something there for everyone and that is just beautiful,” she shares. “There are always flavors in there that people are going to enjoy. It might be as a dram, it might be as a highball, it might be as a cocktail.”

Walker firmly believes that enjoying whisky should not be constrained by rigid rules, emphasizing that “it’s not the case at all that whisky is for a certain gender, or is to be consumed in a specific manner or at a certain time of day. Look at some of our innovations, including Johnny Blonde, which is a lighter and more approachable option designed to be enjoyed with lemonade or mixed into cocktails.”

Utilizing the highball is one of the simplest ways to incorporate the flavors you desire—ensure you have quality soda water available (Fever Tree is an excellent option) along with plenty of good ice and fresh citrus. According to Walker, “The highball serves as an excellent introduction for anyone delving into whisky. It is light and refreshing, less intense than sipping whisky neat, making it more approachable for newcomers. This cocktail allows for a lot of creativity – you can combine whisky with soda water, ginger ale, or other flavored sodas to match your preferences. Personally, I enjoy a highball made with blood orange soda or tonic water.” Regarding the spirit, Walker suggests opting for their Black Label blend, stating, “the well-balanced combination of creamy toffee, soft apple, vanilla, and a hint of smoky finish makes it a versatile choice that excels in cocktails, offering bold flavors without overpowering the palate.” It’s not merely about deep contemplation while gazing into a fire with a dram in hand. Instead, Walker emphasizes, “Ultimately, it’s quite straightforward. When choosing the whisky cocktail for you, prioritize flavor above all else, always focus on flavor first.”

Ice Chalet is the latest limited edition from the brand—once it sells out, it’s gone for good. This expression is made from a selection of whiskies distilled during Scotland’s coldest years. Incorporating Champagne (any quality brut, particularly méthode champenoise, will do) transforms this drink into a true luxury cocktail.
