Jameson Irish Whiskey has secured a significant multiyear partnership with the NFL, becoming its official spirits sponsor. This partnership highlights the growing presence of spirits brands in the sports industry, traditionally dominated by beer companies.
As part of the agreement, Jameson will gain exclusive marketing rights at key league events, including the Super Bowl Experience and the NFL Draft, although financial details were not disclosed. However, sources suggest the sponsorship costs around $20 million annually. Colin Kavanagh, the CMO at Pernod Ricard North America, emphasized the synergy between the NFL’s cultural impact and Jameson’s marketing goals, particularly as the league expands its global reach.
For decades, beer brands, especially those like Anheuser-Busch InBev, have led the alcohol market in sports venues. Yet, the spirits sector has steadily made inroads, with Diageo previously signing the first NFL spirits sponsorship deal. Their partnership ended this year, paving the way for Jameson’s entry.
Kavanagh remarked that the changing consumer landscape favors personal connections, making sports partnerships valuable for brands. Jameson’s involvement with the NFL not only aligns with their audience but also responds to a broader market trend where consumers desire real-world engagement over digital interactions.
This partnership is a strategic move for Pernod Ricard, especially amidst recent declines in beverage alcohol consumption. As the second-best-selling brand in Pernod Ricard’s lineup, Jameson’s broad appeal makes it an ideal representative for their NFL association. The deal also includes sponsorship of four international NFL games annually.
Through this agreement, Jameson aims to enhance its visibility and engagement with fans in key markets across various platforms, bringing unique local experiences to enhance the gameday atmosphere, regardless of ticket ownership.
