For the first time in 15 years, Bulleit is introducing a new core whiskey to its lineup, named Bulleit ’87. This whiskey is a unique blend of bourbon and rye, marking a significant milestone for the Diageo-owned brand. The launch took place at the Tales of the Cocktail conference in New Orleans and is set to hit select retailers across the nation in September at a price of $29.99.
The name ’87 doesn’t represent an age; instead, it honors the year Bulleit was founded. It reflects the brand’s rich history in rye whiskey, seen in its high-rye bourbon and the Bulleit 95 Rye.
To craft Bulleit ’87, the bourbon is distilled, barreled, and aged at its Shelbyville, Kentucky facility, while the rye is produced and aged in Indiana. Each whiskey is matured separately for at least four years and then finished in their original barrels with toasted American and French oak staves for an additional four to six weeks before being blended at 45% ABV.
In terms of flavor, the whiskey offers notes of caramel and brown sugar, with a finish that combines sweetness and rye spice, making it ideal for sipping either neat or over ice.
Phil Gelineau, Bulleit’s whiskey R&D manager, likened the blending process to making a cake, where the bourbon acts as the sponge, rye serves as the chocolate shavings, and the staves act as the buttercream that brings the flavors together.
Bulleit ’87 represents the brand’s effort to innovate while staying true to its roots. Bulleit’s connection to rye dates back to its inception, where Tom Bulleit was inspired by a family recipe rooted in high-rye whiskey.
Notably, Bulleit hasn’t introduced a new whiskey to its permanent range since the launch of Bulleit Rye in 2011. Although they have experimented with limited releases and higher-end whiskeys in recent years, the release of ’87 offers fans a new year-round option alongside its original bourbon and rye.
Supporting the launch will be a 15-city sampling tour, showcasing the whiskey paired with local foods. In addition, the bottle itself has a new design featuring a blue label, setting it apart visually from other Bulleit products.
In summary, Bulleit ’87 combines the best of the brand’s bourbon and rye heritage into one compelling bottle, aiming to capture the heart of its whiskey philosophy.
