Chinese authorities are currently conducting an investigation after a video went viral on social media, allegedly showing a worker from Tsingtao engaging in inappropriate behavior. The video depicts the worker urinating into a tank that is believed to contain ingredients for Tsingtao’s popular beer. The clip has garnered millions of views, causing outrage and concern among consumers.
Tsingtao, being one of China’s leading beer producers and largest exporters, promptly reported the incident to the police upon discovering the video. The company assured the public that the batch of ingredients involved had been appropriately sealed. However, this has not quelled the public’s concerns regarding the quality and safety of the beer.
The video, which surfaced online last Thursday, shows a worker dressed in the company’s uniform and protective headgear scaling a high wall and entering the container before urinating inside it. According to local news outlet The Paper, the location tag of the clip indicates that it was filmed at the Tsingtao beer No.3 factory. However, an internal source cited by “National Business Daily” claimed that both the person who recorded the video and the individual seen in it were not direct employees of Tsingtao.
In response to the video, the bureau of market supervision and administration of Pingdu City, where the factory is situated, swiftly assembled a team to conduct an on-site investigation. The bureau took immediate action by sealing the entire batch of ingredients featured in the clip. The bureau has also assured the public that it will handle the matter seriously once all relevant details are confirmed.
Tsingtao expressed its deep concern over the online video, emphasizing that it has taken the matter seriously and that the police have initiated their own investigation. The company has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident but has been reached out to by the BBC for further comments.
The video has generated shock and disbelief on Chinese social media platforms. Tsingtao is highly renowned both domestically and internationally, making the incident particularly damaging to its brand reputation. Commenting on the situation, one popular comment on the X-like platform Weibo reads, “A single act of negligence by this worker could result in significant financial losses for the company.” Another user, who does not consume beer, expressed concern, “It’s unimaginable if this incident tarnishes the reputation of such a well-known brand.” Users are also questioning whether this is an isolated occurrence or if similar incidents have gone unnoticed in the past.
The repercussions of the video were initially reflected in the sharp decline of Tsingtao Brewery’s shares when the Shanghai Stock Exchange opened on Monday. However, trading later stabilized, and the Hong Kong market, where Tsingtao shares are also listed, remained closed on Monday due to the Chung Yeung Festival holiday.
The investigation into this incident will undoubtedly have a significant impact on Tsingtao’s future. The company will need to respond swiftly and transparently, reassuring consumers of its commitment to quality and ensuring that such incidents are prevented in the future.
